US Ambassador Sergio Gor’s remarks in Srinagar reveal lack of understanding of Jammu and Kashmir’s history and the current situation there. Before his visit, he should have been briefed about the United States’ own policy on Kashmir and a dozen operative UN Security Council resolutions on the dispute. Jammu and Kashmir is not part of India and remains on the active agenda of the Security Council. The UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), a peacekeeping mission, remains deployed.
