Kolymbithres Beach, Paros: Nature's Own Sculpture Gallery

Kolymbithres is not your typical Greek beach. The sea is beautiful, of course, but it is the strange landscape surrounding the water that makes this corner of Paros so memorable.

Huge smooth rock formations rise along the coast, shaped over time by wind and water. Their rounded curves create a series of small coves and sandy pockets, giving the coastline the appearance of a natural sculpture garden.

It is a place that deserves a little exploration.

Things to enjoy include:
•Swimming in the clear Aegean water
•Exploring the unusual rock formations
•Snorkelling around the rocky shoreline
•Discovering the coast by boat or paddle
•Photographing the dramatic landscape
•Relaxing in one of the sheltered coves

The rock formations are what make Kolymbithres different. Pale, rounded and sculptural, they contrast beautifully with the deep blue sea.

Rather than simply choosing a spot and staying there all day, take some time to wander along the shoreline. You may find a quieter little cove or a new angle looking back across the bay.

The water is wonderfully inviting, especially on a hot summer day, and the sheltered sections around the rocks can be perfect for a relaxed swim.

Kolymbithres is also a fantastic place for photography. The combination of pale stone, brilliant blue water and bright Cycladic sunlight gives almost every viewpoint a postcard quality.

And yet the beach does not feel overly polished.

It feels natural, unusual and unmistakably Parian.

Spend the day swimming, exploring and soaking up the scenery, then sit back and watch the sunlight move across the rocks.

Some beaches are beautiful because of their water.

Kolymbithres is beautiful because the land itself seems to have been sculpted for the sea.
