After debating, I decided to go ahead and make a thread just sort of analyzing Bruno/his rats/their relationship.

This thread is a bit long, sorry, but I have a lot to say and wanted to spread knowledge about rats.

TW for pet death

Nimble was unfortunately PTS today. The vet said he was not going to get any better, especially since 2 rounds of antibiotics did nothing. He fell asleep in my arms, cuddled in my sweater.

Not saying this to discourage anyone in the slightest, I just want to highlight some of the "cons" of rats because they genuinely are such amazing pets and their deaths are HARD. Any pets is, but christ, I've had a pet of almost every kind and I've bonded the most with my rats.

LT I know that's pretty dark and I almost always post about the positives of rats, but I've also had people tell me that Bruno + my posts make them want to get rats and I just want to keep it real: rats are hard. They do not live long and can get very, very ill, very easily.

The saying "they were only a part of your life, but you were their entire life" is very true because they're in your life for 1-2 (3-4 if you're extremely lucky) years and take up such a huge part of your heart that's gone once they inevitably pass.

If he doesn't improve despite the meds he's on, and how if it's what they think it is it isn't even worth operating on as his age makes him too unstable for surgery & the type of tumor is recurring & deep, the best option is PTS which kills me but I don't want him suffering.

I'm returning from my slumber briefly to just ask for ya'll to send some good vibes Nimble's way. He isn't doing very well and if the medications he's on don't improve his condition I'll have to have him PTS which is absolutely killing me.

over this next week, if it responds to the medications (which would mean it most likely isn't cancerous), etc. He's still eating, drinking, grooming, engaging with their toys & enrichment which are good signs for QOL but that doesn't mean he isn't suffering, and

Rat update

Nimble is 2yrs old and is beginning to slow down a bit. He's very sleepy yet still will eat and drink, yet seems to prefer I hand feed/water him. He's lost some weight so he's getting a lot of extra food in the form of baby food, coconut, rice, etc.

@jasperthatghost settle into a routine with them it's not hard at all as rats learn your routine, typically! The time it takes for them to bond with you varies but it's always so rewarding. I've had cats, dogs, turtles, birds, fish, rabbits, etc, and I've loved them all but I've bonded the most
