Yesterday my daughter, who is studying in the United States, attended the Springboks versus All Blacks match in Baltimore.
She spent five years of her life in that city before moving to Cleveland. At the stadium she bumped into an old school mate from Dainfern College who now lives in Florida. Two South Africans, far from home, finding each other in a crowd of more than 68,000. It was already an emotional moment.
What neither of them expected was how deeply they would be moved by our national anthem. Standing there, thousands of kilometres from home, singing Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika. Pride in our roots. Pride in our diversity. Pride in excellence. And faith - watching the circle and the kneeling that followed the final whistle.
That image stayed with me.
There is a well known observation in India, popularised by Gurcharan Das, that “India grows at night while the government sleeps.” It captures a country whose people and enterprises often advance despite, rather than because of, the state. South Africa has that same untapped potential. We see it in the Springboks. World-class performance is not confined to the rugby field. It exists across our people, our businesses, our communities. We have what it takes.
What we still need is simple, and it is hard:
Create a genuinely business-friendly environment. Confront crime with seriousness and consistency. Appoint leaders in both the private and public sectors on merit.
Those three interventions would allow this country to occupy the place it deserves among the winning nations of the world.
We are a resilient people. Our character has been forged in difficulty. In a volatile world, that character is not a weakness. It is an advantage.
The Springboks keep showing us what is possible when talent, discipline, purpose and belief come together. The rest of the country can do the same.
We have the people. We have the potential. Now we must get our act together and grow during the day as well.

Goals that get conceded from loss of possession are a result of a few circumstances and there’s remedies for such and the nature of the game itself is goals scored from mistakes by opposition players or brilliance of creation by the scoring team. Football is SCIENCE and science is methodological, needing cognitive cohesion 🧠 apart from physical effort.

Yesterday I posted something about the leading Zimbabwean eye surgeon, Dr Solomon Guramatunhu, and how he has been a long-standing proponent of natural hair, especially for women.
I saw today that a few women went into meltdown over that. More importantly, a lot of my non-Zimbabwean social media followers have been asking what the discourse was about.
For that reason, I have cut this piece from one of the interviews he did with Trevor Ncube, where he explains his views on this particular issue and the thinking behind them.
In this the year 2026, please encourage your husbands, boyfriends, side boyfriends, sons and nephews to wear socks, in particular when dressed for formal occassions ie weddings, gala dinners, graduation ceremonies, funerals etc. This fashion trend of not wearing socks is not only clumsy and tacky; it is highly unsophisticated.
PS. You can get away with not wearing socks when dressed in a linen suit, semi formal attire, chinos and demin and ideally you should be in a moccasin or loafers
Major cheat code in life:
Master the graceful exit. From conversations. From parties. From opportunities. “This has been wonderful, but I need to go.” No elaborate excuses. No fake emergencies. Just clear kind departure. Most people don’t know how to leave. They stay too long or leave badly. Master the exit.
Major cheat code for life: Become brutally honest with yourself. About your habits. Your effort. Your excuses. Your blind spots. Self-honesty is uncomfortable, but it'll save you years of wasted time. You can’t fix what you keep lying about.
People who cannot be trusted to run a Spaza shop for a minute are appointed as mayors; municipal managers; hospital CEOs; MECs and SOE CEOs. As South Africans, we then expect from them, service delivery not chaos. Crazy isn’t. The joke is on us. #ProudlySA

Just because Donald Trump acts goofy doesn’t mean his presidency wouldn’t be dangerous. And you don’t have to take my word for it. Lately, some of the people who know Trump the best have been saying in no uncertain terms that he should not be president again.
