I wish that I had just known on Sunday night that the warranty was expired and that I was on my own. I would have ordered a new monitor then and been done with it. This is worse.
Lessons learned:
1) Don't buy HP.
2) Don't buy protection packages because they are a waste of money.

What's happening? The really poor support from @HPSupport. My monitor went kaput on Sunday. I checked the model & serial number to find out that uncharacteristically I had purchased the protection package for next business day replacement and everything was still covered
