Day1: Why I'm learning about @megaeth - not your typical L2
there are so many Layer 2s, such as Arbitrum, Katana, Optimism, and many others, which made me curious why we need one more L2 and why MegaEth is being even built?
second question that came to my mind was, why do we need a Layer 2 in first place?
- cause Eth has a scalability issue
- eth can only process 15–20 TPS, literally I can type faster than this
- high gas fees, everyone know this, pre-rich people like me avoid it
- during congestion the fees are nightmares
- low TPS means bad user experience, dApps are slow, can make you throw your phone or break the pc
What makes MegEth special?
"make Ethereum great again"
- by targeting sub-millisecond transaction finality
- almost instantly within 1–10 milliseconds
- designed for 100,000+ TPS
[useful terms
- Latency - means how fast a blockchain confirms and finalizes a transaction
- Finality- the point at which a transaction is irreversible
- Throughput - how many transactions a chain can process per second]
Why do we need high TPS?
-> imagine playing fortnite on web3, every in game action (shooting, walking, scoring) need to instantly.
- with MegEth's sub-finality, every action happen in real time, no lag!
-> social media apps like X experience outages under heavy use
-> Solana has high speed but has suffered multiple outages under heavy use, MegaEth is designed to avoid this
MegaEth v/s Solana:
1) Finality:
Solana - 12 to 13 seconds
MegaEth - 1 to 10 milliseconds (goal: sub-seconds)
2) TPS:
Solana - 1000 to 2500 (claimed 65k but not tested)
MegaEth - 20,000+ now (goal: 100K+)
What is the benefit of this?
- making dApps as fast as web2 apps
- also making sure we get Ethereum security
MegaEth has promised to never spin off into another chain and will stay with Ethereum
But why does Ethereum security matter?
- has thousands of nodes globally
- no single entity control the block production
- anyone can become a validator by staking 32 $Eth
- over 30M ETH (valued in billions of $$) is staked to secure the network
- cheaters/bad actors get their staked ETH slashed
- eth has undergone years of peer review, formal verification, and open development, ensuring trust and security
MegaEth -> max security -> lightning fast speed-> scalable
That's a lot for learning in a single day, just getting started, will keep the momentum going, and learn bit by bit every day.
pardon my poster making skills😂
@Reset_sui All the best bro!
I also have a hard time balancing things and yes prioritising right things but trying to learn with time and yes you also have been a constant motivation! Will follow your journey closely 🫡
