A Madurai court today sentenced nine Tamil Nadu cops to death in the 2020 Sathankulam custodial deaths case, calling it “rarest of rare.”

On 19 Jun 2020 in Sathankulam, Thoothukudi, P. Jayaraj (60) was picked up for keeping his shop open past lockdown hours.

It was a petty violation, something that would normally attract a fine. Instead, he was taken to the police station and beaten. Word reached his son, J. Bennix (31), who came to the station.

When Bennix arrived and saw his father already assaulted, he protested and argued with the police. That confrontation became the turning point. Instead of de-escalating, the police turned on both of them with far greater intensity. What followed was not sporadic violence but sustained custodial torture. Through the night, both men were stripped and repeatedly beaten with lathis. Eyewitnesses later described continuous assault: blow after blow, hour after hour, targeting not just the limbs and back but also lathis forced into their rectums. The violence was methodical and prolonged, not a sudden burst of anger. Their blood was splattered across the station walls, and they were made to clean the floor of their own blood multiple times.

The next morning, they were taken to a govt hospital and, shockingly, declared “fit” for custody despite requiring changes of six lungis due to profuse rectal bleeding.

They were then produced before magistrate D. Saravanan, who remanded them to custody without examining their condition or speaking to them directly, citing COVID protocols. He reportedly stood on his balcony while police surrounded the injured men below and, without following basic safeguards against custodial abuse, signaled the police to take them away. The two were then sent to Kovilpatti sub-jail, about 100 km from Sathankulam. Both died within the next few days.

This wasn’t some distant, dark chapter from history. This happened in 2020, just a few years ago, out in the open, without fear of law, backlash, or consequence. And that’s what makes it worse.

Police brutality is routine, not an exception. For every case that shocks the nation, there are countless others that never surface. Many don’t report because they fear the very system meant to protect them. Social media occasionally forces attention, but justice shouldn’t depend on something going viral. Sadly, this will continue because governments are apathetic towards police reforms.

Govt has made sale of E20 petrol mandatory from Apr 1. Here's a quick reminder about relevant things:

1. It was originally mandated to be rolled out by 2030, and it was logical because by then most of the existing vehicles would have been replaced by E20-compliant vehicles. But the govt rolled it out five years earlier, thinking of it as some achievement, like eradication of polio, that you do it sooner, the better.

2. Most of the vehicles in India currently are E20 non-compliant. Running them with E20 surely damages the parts. If non-E20-compliant vehicles can be run on E20 fuel, what's the point of E20-compliant vehicles then? The damage, however, is mostly slow and will show impact in the coming years.

3. But why does data from other countries show no damage to cars running on E20? Because they first replaced the existing vehicles with compliant vehicles and then introduced E20. And even then, they kept the option of E0, E5, and E10 available for a minuscule population who didn't have E20-compliant cars. India is the only country that introduced E20 without first phasing out non-compliant cars. It’s like rolling out 6G without introducing 6G handsets in the market, while simultaneously withdrawing 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G.

4. But my car is E20-compliant. Why should I worry? Lol! Because it doesn't end with E20. The goal is to move to E27, E30, and further ahead over time. So your today-purchased E20 car, in all likelihood, won't have compliant fuel in the coming years.

5. But it's good for the country. Yes, it is, but it was still good for the country if it was rolled out properly. As per the original plan, by 2030. They are rolling it out without phasing out the non-compliant vehicles, who are in the majority. So eventually people will pay the price of this haphazard policy decision.

Within hours of the CJI flagging the issue, NCERT withdrew the books and issued an apology. Of the 2.25 lakh copies printed, 2,24,962 were recalled to the warehouse, with efforts underway to retrieve the remaining 38 copies already sold.

This panicked knee-jerk apology itself proves the inclusion of judicial corruption in the textbook was neither deliberate nor ideologically driven by NCERT or the ministry. They were clearly caught off guard. The more plausible explanation is simple incompetence: the authors wrote it, and NCERT and the education ministry didn't bother proofread. Had this been a conscious decision, there would have been at least a token defence of academic autonomy or content integrity. Instead, they folded instantly, without argument, explanation, or spine.

If Dharmendra Pradhan loses his chair, it won’t be over the UGC issue. It will be over this, the NCERT debacle. And ironically, not for standing up to the judiciary, but for accidentally appearing to do so by mistake.

What a stupid logic!

1. Completing MBBS is not a measure of competence because first, candidates enter MBBS through the same diluted cut-offs and reservation regime, and then pass due to an increasingly lenient examination system.

There was a time under Pune University in Maharashtra when nearly half a batch failed First MBBS. After liberalisation and the shift to MUHS, Nashik, failure became uncommon. And since NMC replaced MCI, failure has become impossible thanks to commercialisation, lenient exams, inflated internals, moderation, and fear of complaints ensure that once admitted, students pass regardless of competence.

2. If qualifying MBBS truly guaranteed clinical and cognitive competence, that competence would logically manifest in NEET-PG. Instead, the system now requires dragging the cut-off down to –40 to accommodate candidates. In an exam where someone blindly marking one option for all questions can score 50 marks, someone scoring –40 reflects the lowest level of intellectual performance known to mankind. Can you call them competent?

If MBBS alone guarantees competence, NEET-PG is redundant. Ranking is pointless. Merit is irrelevant. Random seat allocation would suffice.

So a better logic from the Centre would have been that they are reducing the cut-off to minus 40 to foil some deep-state conspiracy, which the cattle class would realise in 2047.

There are 234 MLAs in Tamilnadu assembly. 39 MPs. Not one of them is a Brahmin.

This is the same state where 95% of the population enjoys reservation. Basically, it is reservations for almost everyone except Brahmins. .

This is not social justice but complete marginalization of a minority community.

GCs of other states must remember: TN model today is India model tomorrow. TN first broke 50% barrier. Others are catching up.

If GCs do not fight against injustice today, this will be your future.

Tamilnadu is one of the richest and most industralized states of India. It has been for hundreds of years.

Still, 89% of population is officially classified as "backward" and enjoys OBC/SC/ST reservations in state and central institutions.

How is this even possible? How can 89% population even be backward in such a developed state?

Descendants of great Tamil empires like Pallavas and Cholas enjoy reservation as "Most Backward castes"(MBC).

How is it even fair that wealthy communities that ruled for 1000s of years get preferential treatment by the state but a poor GC from poorest state like Bihar discriminated against ?
