Sitting at 4k, I am clearly having a good season. That got me into thinking what lesson I can learn for next season.

If I have to take one lesson from this #FPL season then WC1 is the most powerful chip available to us. If you can get to a good rank early then you get to a position where you can keep on playing sensibly without much pressure. If you get to a bad rank early season, psychologically you would be forced to take more risks.

WC1

- Play it right and play it early. Playing right is the most important part. But, the earlier you play it the better (assuming you are making big changes to GW1 team)

- Recognize which teams are good and which are bad for the season. Most important part for WC1, which is not an easy thing to do, but that’s the skill part. The earlier you recognize the good/bad teams/assets than other #FPL managers the more advantage you can get.

Example — This season, it became clear that Arsenal, Villa, Spurs were going through great starts and the likes of United, Chelsea were going through a bad start/season. They weren’t settled. That became the backbone of WC1 teams. Most people had WC1 teams based on this. People who went early found more success.

- Recognize great assets early and if you are absolutely convinced about their long term potential, get them early even for a hit.

Example — It became clear that Watkins was going to be a top asset (we had enough sample size). Same for Palmer. To many, it became evident early that he was going to be nailed and talisman for Chelsea. Similar for Foden. This season looked different for him with KDB out. Many such examples exist.

Once you reach mid season, most serious managers would be making similar moves.m with BGW/DGW planning. The pool of assets we target become small (hope that changes next season). You can still move up, but you would need your 1/2 differentials to deliver for you many times. At the start of the season, the teams are genuinely different and you get opportunities to get good assets in multiple positions which other players may not have.

A differential captain is one of the big ways to climb ranks, but often this game punishes you hugely for trying to be different.

Credit to those who had the guts to go against Haaland, this stage of the season is the time to go for it. Don’t beat yourself up too much about it

It is a strong word but I do hate them. I honestly thing they make the community on here a worse place.

They make people who are already feeling a bit crap about their decision feel worse - and also push down any out of the box or creative thinking because people don’t want to risk it again.

Haaland was obviously a great captaincy shout this week, but Palmer’s scored double digits in 4/5 last home games. Saka has just got 10 (Haaland captainers might even have taken that), Watkins is playing the whipping boys of the league, and Foden and KDB have the form and pedigree to rightly be considered as viable alternatives. There were some seriously good alternatives to Haaland this week. He’s just come in with the biggest score of the season and made it look ridiculous. In the double Gameweek where he was the “most obvious TC ever” he only got 1 goal in both games!

Sometimes the game is about taking a bit of a risk and hoping the cards go your way, especially for those trying to push into the top 1k/10k/100k - or those having crap seasons who need a bit of luck because finishing 900k means as much to them as finishing 400k…

… but failing that, people don’t need an excuse! The game should be about captaining who you want, buying players who you want, because that what keeps the game interesting and not as stale as it is becoming more and more each year

The real advantage of Wildcarding in GW35 isn’t actually GW35, it’s the weeks around it where you can dead end 34 and get 20 points on the GW37 Bench Boost after a -8.
