Malaysia must stop treating every Data Centre FDI announcement as an unquestionable economic victory.

1. A 1 GW data centre operating 24/7 consumes about 8.76 TWh of electricity annually.

2. To generate an equivalent amount from solar in Malaysia would require roughly 6.5 GWp of solar capacity, occupying about 25,000–30,000 acres of land.

3. That is before accounting for battery storage, transmission lines, grid upgrades and backup generation.

4. Data centres also consume significant amounts of water for cooling.

5. After construction, they create relatively few permanent jobs compared with the electricity, land and water they consume.

6. Much of the high-value equipment is imported.

7. The profits, cloud platforms, intellectual property and AI models remain foreign-owned.

8. Malaysia provides the land, electricity, water, grid capacity and tax incentives.

9. Foreign hyperscalers capture most of the long-term economic value.

10. That same electricity could support semiconductor manufacturing, advanced industries, local businesses and activities that create far more Malaysian jobs per MW.

11. Headline FDI figures are not the same as real national economic value.

12. Every new data centre should be assessed based on:

• Malaysian income and jobs created per MW
• Full electricity and grid costs
• Water consumption
• Tax revenue after incentives
• Local technology transfer
• Additional renewable generation funded
• Opportunity cost to other industries and households

13. Data centres must pay the full economic and environmental cost of the resources they consume.

14. Malaysia must not become a giant power plant and cooling system for foreign Big Tech while calling it development.
