Actually it doesn’t. Youth mental health outcomes drop at different stages across western countries, even as smartphone roll-out remained the same. You can read multiple broad-based studies researching that fail to find a conclusive link, including one study conducted by the University of Manchester that was published this year. Correlation doesn’t equal causation.

I was part of the first online generation, so I’m perfectly aware of the downsides (and upsides!) of internet use. This was also during a period where the internet was much less regulated than it is now.

We do have evidence that government policy outcomes can negatively impact mental health, though, like the pandemic lockdowns.

Why would we hand over yet more censorship powers to the state? Parents must protect their children, but this is Digital ID through a backdoor.
