This is false and ridiculous.
This propaganda spread by the US government (which supports actual dictatorships around the world) has been widely regurgitated by the corporate media.
But they are all taking out of context comments made by Nicaragua's Co-President Daniel Ortega.
Below I have posted a screenshot of the official transcript of the speech given by Ortega on 19 July 2026, alongside my translation. (This is link to the official transcript: https://t.co/9x3oIbipC4)
The full context clearly shows that Ortega was discussing the history of US interference in Nicaragua, and how the US government funds right-wing political parties to try to overthrow the Sandinista Front. (This should not come as a surprise to anyone who knows the basic history of Nicaragua and the CIA's Contra terror war in the 1980s.)
In 2018, the US government sponsored a very violent coup attempt in Nicaragua, which was extremely traumatic for the population.
Ortega was saying that "there will be no more elections" for these coup-plotting right-wing political parties that are funded by the US government.
Nicaragua is defending its sovereignty and preventing the US empire from installing another puppet regime like the corrupt Somoza dictatorship, which Washington propped up for decades, on the corpses of countless Nicaraguans.
The US empire has invaded Nicaragua multiple times, militarily occupied the country, waged a terror war, imposed sanctions, funded the opposition, and meddled nonstop in its elections. The Sandinista government is saying that that history of foreign interference is over. No more.
Ortega didn't say this. He said that Nicaragua won't allow US-financed candidates and election meddling. That's very different than claiming Nicaragua "Will No Longer Hold Elections." @democracynow should retract this.
Warmonger Adam Smith has been invited on Breaking Points to “debate” the DSA’s popularity, but his socialist, anti war, pro-Palestine challenger @cmkshama is excluded because, in Ryan Grim’s words, she isn’t “newsworthy.”
Kshama was the first socialist to sit on the Seattle city council since 1877, and in that role, won the fight for $15. Meanwhile, Smith is the Zionist ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, who only backed down off his support of the Israel/US Military tech merger bc of pressure from Kshama in this race.
Smith was rude, dismissive, & prevaricating in response to Krystal's questioning. He holds the racist & contradictory beliefs that Israel should only exist as a Jewish supremacist state, & that no democracy can exist if Arabs have equal rights. He also admitted that while he would vote to remove section 224 from the NDAA, he wouldn't vote against the NDAA if his effort to remove 224 failed. (He also objected to Krystal's accurate characterization of section 224 as allowing the merging of Israel's military intelligence with the US's, revealing his true sympathy for the bill).
At no point during this discussion of the "left" did anyone feel like it was worth informing the audience that establishment corporatist warmongering Smith is facing a primary challenge on August 4th. The Breaking Points audience has to look elsewhere for coverage of that race.
🚨 BREAKING:
Spain responded harshly to Israel's statements:
"We are not defaming you, Israel, we are describing you: You are a genocidal and criminal regime."
"You will all be held accountable before the International Criminal Court."
Our children have watched other children in multiple countries around the 🌎 being starved to death, displaced, raped, maimed & murdered by the US & its genocidal colony on video for their entire lives.
Reality broke them from YOUR christofascist imperialist indoctrination.
Get it right @mtaibbi. @RoKhanna was very clear that he absolutely supports violence by “Israel” but not resistance and self-defense by the victims of its apartheid, occupation and genocide. Don’t use Palestinians as fodder for your petty point scoring.
Kamala Harris wasn't saddened to learn of the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh or Aysenur Ezgi Eygi - both killed by the IDF and both American citizens.
Or Refaat Alareer, a Palestinian poet.
Or 7 month old Sam Fahd Abu Haikal, shot in the head by IDF.
But genocidal freak Lindsey Graham, well that's a different story.
Palestinians have the right to kill Israeli soldiers violently invading their land under international law. That's not radical, it's a basic right of occupied people. Saying Israel can mass murder Palestinians & Palestinians should sit on their hands is the extremist position
Jeremy Scahill is a journalist, not a Democratic campaign consultant.
It is not his job to only ask questions he believes will help select candidates be perceived as more electable.
I’m sorry this is beyond disingenuous. You’re not for nonviolence! You’ve repeatedly say you support Israel’s right to “go after Hamas” with bombs and F35s. This is not a principled stance against violence as such, it’s a selective and self serving stance against some violence.
This was an incredible interview that everyone needs to watch. Expect more of exactly what Ro Khanna is doing from other politicians in the run up to 2028: cynically using Palestinians, to position themselves as in line with a growing anti-Israel base while not really doing much of anything to hold the U.S. govt policies and Israel accountable for the occupation, apartheid and genocide.
This is all image management and @jeremyscahill showcases it by this brilliant interrogation.
The reason Israelis and its American loyalists are so horrified by the interview with @RoKhanna is because @jeremyscahill advocates hehre the most taboo idea of all taboos in DC:
That the same moral standards the US and Israel purport to impose on the world also apply to them.
Thus: if Israel had the right to attack and bomb the shit out of Palestinians due to October 7, then Palestinians had and have the right to attack Israelis (especially military bases and IDF soldiers) due to Israeli violence against them on Oct 6, Oct 5 and pretty much every day befoe that for the prior years.
Excellent questioning of this snake Ro Khanna who wants to rehabilitate the genocidal Democratic Party with thoughts and prayers for Palestinians but who offers nothing but the material continuation of their genocide by the US and Israel.
It's laughable to hear Ryan Grim say he won't cover @cmkshama cz she isn't “serious”, doesn’t have a “hook” & isn’t competitive.
How is this not gate-keeping for Democrats?
Says he covered Zohran when polling 1% cz he had a hook: interviewing Trumpsters in the street. Whereas Sawant’s fight for $15 that kicked off a national movement & her challenge to Adam Smith, who initiated the Isrl-US defense tech merger, isn’t newsworthy?
