In Memory of LUGARD

Lugard was one of Tsavo’s greatest elephants — a true super tusker whose sweeping ivory and calm, wise presence made him a living symbol of Africa’s natural heritage. Known since 2014 through the Big Tusker Project, he moved confidently between Tsavo East and West, shaping our understanding of elephant corridors and inspiring the protection of vital landscapes.

Gentle in temperament and unmistakable with the wart on his trunk, Lugard embodied both the majesty and fragility of the species. Over the years, he fathered many calves, ensuring that his rare and precious genetic line will continue long after him.

In November 2022, during a harsh drought, Lugard passed from natural causes, his great tusks still intact — a testament to the dedication of those who worked tirelessly to protect him throughout his long life.

Today we remember Lugard not only for his incredible tusks, but for what he represented: resilience, dignity, and the success of conservation when people choose to protect what is irreplaceable. His legacy lives on in his offspring, in the paths he carved across Tsavo, and in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to witness his greatness.

Lugard walked as a giant — and he leaves a legacy that will stand for generations.
