@OpenAI @OpenAIHelp @thsottiaux I’m reaching out again regarding Case #15161483, and I really hope someone can help me with this.
I was previously on Pro 20X through Apple. After an Apple payment processing issue, my renewal failed and I was downgraded to 5X.
At first I understood that Pro 20X upgrades were paused, so I accepted that there may not have been an immediate way back.
The situation has now changed though.
My account is showing the Pro $200 / 20X return option again, and the account state also shows:
is_eligible_for_pro_200_pause_2026_09: true
So as far as I can tell, my account is currently eligible for the one-time Pro 20X return.
The problem is that when I try to complete it on the web, ChatGPT tells me:
“It looks like you already have an active mobile subscription. Switch to your mobile app to upgrade.”
But Apple no longer shows Pro 20X as an available subscription option for me.
So I am stuck in a situation where OpenAI appears to consider my account eligible for the return, but the web sends me back to iOS, while iOS no longer provides the 20X plan.
I also checked the account state and it shows:
purchase_origin_platform: chatgpt_mobile_ios
and
eligible_purchase_platforms: ["chatgpt_ios"]
I understand these are internal fields and I am not trying to tell Support how the billing system should be changed. I am only sharing them because they seem to reflect the exact issue I am experiencing.
I have already gone through Restore Purchases, checked the Apple subscription options, checked the web checkout, checked the mobile app, and shared screenshots and the account-state information with Support.
One support agent, Dominic, understood the situation and told me that an account-specific review would be carried out to determine the correct Pro 20X return path for my Apple-managed subscription. I was also advised not to cancel or change my Apple subscription while that review was taking place.
After that, I started receiving the general guidance to cancel the Apple subscription, wait for the current billing period to end, and then check what plans are available on the web.
I completely understand why that is the standard process for moving from Apple billing to web billing, but that is not quite what I am trying to do.
I am not trying to simply migrate my 5X subscription later.
I am trying to use the one-time Pro 20X return that my account is already showing me as eligible for now.
Canceling the Apple subscription today would also not immediately solve the issue, because the subscription would remain active until the end of the current billing period, and the web would still continue to detect an active mobile subscription during that time.
I also want to make it very clear that I am not asking for free access, extra usage, credits, or any special treatment.
I am more than happy to pay the full $200.
I simply need a supported way to complete the Pro 20X return that my account is already eligible for.
I have been using ChatGPT and Codex heavily for a long time, for development, research, planning, day-to-day work and many other things. I have honestly never seriously considered switching to another AI subscription because OpenAI’s models have always been the most consistent for me in terms of quality, understanding and reliability.
That is also why I have been trying so hard to get this resolved instead of just moving elsewhere.
The difference between 5X and 20X is also quite significant for my workload. On 5X I was already around 39% through my limit after roughly one day of normal usage, while 20X would normally last me around 3 to 4 days with similar usage.
I am currently in the middle of important development work, so this has genuinely started affecting my workflow.
I have also seen other Apple-billed users on X describing a very similar situation, so I am wondering if this is an edge case affecting people who are eligible for the 20X return but originally subscribed through Apple.
@thsottiaux I have mentioned you a few times already, and I’m sorry for repeatedly tagging you. I’m only doing so because I genuinely do not know where else to take this after several days of trying to explain the same billing situation through Support.
I would be extremely grateful if someone at @OpenAI could please take another look at Case #15161483 and help me find a supported way to complete the Pro 20X return while my account is eligible.

Someone @thsottiaux@oscardumlao@michaelaiello@_samirism@AriX@liamesp@ajambrosino, could you please take a look into this?
It’s not just me who is stuck because of an existing Apple subscription. A number of users seem to be unable to upgrade even when the higher Pro tier is available to them.
Would really be helpful if someone could look into this and help clarify the upgrade path for Apple subscribers.
@thsottiaux@OpenAI I’m seeing people who were downgraded because of payment errors, or who were previously subscribed to 20X, getting the option to resubscribe again through the web/Codex.
Please do something for users who originally subscribed through Apple as well. We should have the same option to resubscribe.
Hi @OpenAISupport@OpenAI@thsottiaux , I urgently need help escalating Case Number: 15161483. I’ve been a loyal ChatGPT Plus user who upgraded to the Pro 20x plan right away, but my account was just downgraded to the 5x plan due to a payment processing glitch entirely outside my control.
My bank confirmed the mandate was fully active with zero issues on their end. I understand standard policies regarding Apple-managed billing, but I am sincerely requesting a one-time exception. I am completely willing to cancel my Apple subscription entirely and subscribe directly through an OpenAI payment link or invoice to regain my 20x access.
This is absolutely critical for my work. I am building a startup and rely heavily on ChatGPT and Codex to develop an anti-bot solution that is on the very verge of completion. I am in the process of associating with several agencies for this deployment, and multiple related services depend on this system. Losing the 20x capacity right at this crucial stage before launch severely impacts my overall development timeline.
I know new 20x signups are paused, but since I was already an active subscriber who lost access due to a glitch, is there any escalation path or manual workaround your team can provide? I would be incredibly grateful for any help in restoring my tier.
@VraserX Cant see on my end? I am also on apple subscription.. I was on 20x and got downgraded to 5x.. But now i am trying to change and I cant seem to find it
@thsottiaux I am writing to request an escalation or a one-time exception regarding Case Number: 15161483.
I have been a dedicated Plus user for a long time and upgraded to the Pro 20x plan immediately upon its release. Recently, my scheduled Apple renewal was unexpectedly declined, resulting in an automated downgrade to the 5x plan. I have verified directly with my bank that the payment mandate is fully processed and active, with zero issues on their end.
OpenAi - Support (Razel) informed me that because the subscription is Apple-managed, they cannot manually restore it or provide a direct payment link while 20x signups are paused. To resolve this, I am fully prepared to cancel my Apple subscription immediately and transition to direct billing via OpenAI (web link or invoice).
This restoration is critical for my current operations. I am in the final stages of launching an anti-bot startup and am currently finalizing service agreements with several agencies. My daily workflow relies heavily on ChatGPT and Codex. Losing the 20x capacity at this crucial deployment stage severely impacts our development timeline.
@tibo, any assistance in exploring a manual workaround or escalation path to retain my current tier would be immensely appreciated. Thank you for your time and review of this matter.
Hi @OpenAISupport@OpenAI@thsottiaux , I’m reaching out because I urgently need some help getting my account restored to the correct tier.
I have been a loyal ChatGPT customer for a very long time. I was on the ChatGPT Plus plan for ages, and I loved it so much that I switched to the Pro 20x plan immediately just a month after it came out! I rely heavily on it for my workflow and it’s been incredible.
Unfortunately, I just experienced a random billing glitch. My scheduled renewal payment was unexpectedly declined, and I was later downgraded to the 5x plan. I immediately contacted my bank to see what was wrong, and they confirmed that the payment mandate was already properly set up and active. They verified there are absolutely zero issues or blocks on their end.
I know that new signups for the Pro 20x plan are temporarily paused right now, but since I was already an active subscriber and only lost my access due to a system error outside of my control, I am kindly requesting your help to restore my previous tier.
Could someone please assist me with a direct payment link so I can process the renewal directly and get my 20x plan back up and running? I’ve attached a screenshot of the decline message. I would really hate to lose the plan I've been loyal to over a random processing glitch! 🙏
@thsottiaux Claude has better design capabilities.
I’m a Codex user, and what I feel Codex/OpenAI’s models lack is strong frontend design. The UIs they produce often have poor overall aesthetics, and even with a reference, they struggle to understand and replicate the design well.
