The announcement of the passing of Fullerton football coach Julian Smilowitz is more than heartbreaking. Smilowitz was one of the greatest "Salt of the Earth" coaches you would ever meet. When I was at South Hills, we made several stops at Fullerton for passing league, and he was awesome.

Quick story. In 2006, we signed a home-and-home agreement with Fullerton. It was an easy sell for Smilowitz. We played them at CDF and, as you would imagine, it was a hard-fought game. Late in the fourth quarter, we scored a touchdown pass that was a bit of a tough call in our favor for a 14-7 win.

The next morning, I was watching our game film and noticed that the catch shouldn't have been a touchdown. I showed it to Steve Bogan, and he told me to call Smilowitz and tell him that the officials made a bad call. I made the call, but he didn't answer, so I left a message on his machine with an apology.

He called back and said, "Escarcega, we're doubling your fees for passing league next summer." He didn't, but we made sure to visit an establishment the following summer and have a few "refreshments."

Coach Smilowitz was Fullerton HS football and I know that the football gods accepted him at the pearly gates with no debate.

RIP Coach Smilowitz.

Prayers for Brandon please 🙏. Brandon will be having surgery today. In Sat night game in the 2nd quarter just before half time, he tore is lisfranc ligament. They gave him heavy pain meds and a steel plated insole so he could continue playing.The Dr couldn’t believe he he was really even able to walk. This is extremely painful and your foot is totally unstable. Fortunately with surgery he will make a full recovery and come back stronger than ever. I will be with him in Utah for a few days to help out. We so appreciate all the calls, text, messages and support.
