En 1996 nadie lo quiso en el Draft por ser un pívot "bajo de estatura" (2.06 m) y por venir de Virginia Union, una universidad pequeña de División II. Se fue a probar a Italia y lo cortaron tras un solo partido.
Sin rendirse, volvió a EE. UU. a pelear un puesto en el campamento de los Washington Bullets. Quisieron ponerlo a jugar de alero, pero él se aferró a lo suyo: defender duro, bajar rebotes y meter tapones. A pura garra se quedó con el último lugar del roster.
16 años después, ya consagrado como campeón de la NBA y 4 veces Jugador Defensivo del Año, se retiró en 2012 con los Pistons.
En su último juego en The Palace, salió de la duela ovacionado, acomodándose la mítica banda de la cabeza por última vez y dejando el récord de más partidos jugados en la historia y cuatro All-Star consecutivos para un jugador no drafteado.

"The French Connection" was released on this day in 1971. Spectacular police thriller (based on the bestselling novel by Robin Moore) from legendary director William Friedkin and screenwriter Ernest Tidyman.

Highlights: Unforgettable Oscar-winning performance by Gene Hackman; extraordinary cinematography by Owen Roizman; incredible car chase by stunt coordinator/driver Bill Hickman (with Hackman himself performing much of it himself!) is arguably the greatest in film history.

Nominated for eight Academy Awards (and winning five, including Best Picture), "The French Connection" was also a box office sensation that grossed over 70 times its production budget.

A legit masterpiece, this is among my ten favorite films of the 70s.
