@Soc_of_Authors I'd like to see SoA engage directly with the problem so many writers have with bad literary agents, that doesn't just mean when members approach you about it. This feels less like a union and more like a country club. How about getting pro-active where it matters?

As a writer, I don't use literary agents, but for the sake of those who do I look forward to the time when agents are NOT allowed to ask a writer to sign a contract BEFORE they've touted the MS around & had an acceptance from a publishing house. That'd balance up the relationship

Literary agents often say 'my job is to make the novel as good as it can be', but their actual job is to link writers & publishers. Only editors or experienced writers are capable of fixing a novel. Does an agent know the art of editing or constructing a novel? I don't think so.
