A guy called his ISP 4 times in one year complaining about slow Wi-Fi.

Each time, they ran a remote diagnostic, told him everything looked fine on their end, and suggested he upgrade to a faster plan. He upgraded twice. From 200 Mbps to 500 Mbps. His monthly bill went from $60 to $90.

His Wi-Fi didn't get faster. He was still buffering Netflix. Still dropping Zoom calls. Still watching the loading spinner on web pages in his own living room.

His neighbor, a network engineer who's spent 14 years designing and securing corporate networks for hospitals and financial firms, heard him complaining one evening and said: "Can I look at your router for 2 minutes?"

He looked at the settings. He looked at the placement. He ran one speed test.

"Your ISP is delivering 490 Mbps to your modem. Your Wi-Fi is delivering 74 Mbps to your laptop. The problem isn't your internet. It's the 6 feet between your router and your device. The router is inside a cabinet. The channel is congested. The firmware hasn't been updated in 3 years. The DNS is the slowest option available. The bandwidth is halved by a factory setting. And you're renting this equipment for $14/month a device worth $60 that Comcast has charged you $672 for over 4 years."

He changed 9 settings in 15 minutes. The speed test went from 74 Mbps to 440 Mbps.

The next morning, his friend called Comcast and downgraded back to the 200 Mbps plan. His Wi-Fi was still faster than it was on 500 Mbps with factory defaults.

Monthly savings from the downgrade: $30. Monthly savings from returning the rental router: $14. Annual savings: $528 with faster, more stable, more secure internet than he'd ever had.

"Your ISP would rather sell you a faster plan than fix your settings. One makes them $30/month. The other costs them a 5-minute phone call they're not incentivized to make."
