the only consistently proven path to success is being completely delusional about your own abilities and refusing to let reality update your priors until the universe eventually gives up and lets you win. every founder who made it was told they were crazy. every artist who broke through was "unrealistic." every person who built something from nothing had friends and family genuinely concerned about their mental state. the "rational" people who "knew their limits" and "had realistic expectations" are all working for the delusional ones now. you literally cannot achieve anything extraordinary while maintaining an accurate assessment of your odds. the math never works. the market is always saturated. someone more qualified is always already doing it. if you actually internalized the statistics you would never start anything. success selection bias means we only hear from the delusion that worked out. but here's the thing - the cautious realistic people didn't make it either. they just failed quietly at things they didn't care about instead of loudly at things they loved. fake it till you make it isn't a hack. it's the whole game. you act like the person you want to become until your skills catch up to your confidence. there is no other way. the gap between who you are and who you're pretending to be is called growth. stay delusional.
@ebarenholtz 2/ What's needed is a process ontology rather than a substance ontology. Bodies are patterns. Minds are activities of patterned self maintaining bodies. AI is not pattern escaping matter. It is pattern taking on another material form, with goals and embodiment alien to biology.
“I use dreaming, which is a fascinating thing that brains, and nervous systems, and organisms do, as a window into the minds of other animals that share this capacity with us.”

“And so Love is in the wheel of eternity outside of time, just as heat is in fire. For God foreknew in eternity all His created beings, which He brought forth in the fullness of Love…”
- St. Hildegard of Bingen, Liber Divinorum Operum, part i, vision i
all men are mad,
for the circumstance
of existence
is queer beyond belief;
and circumspect
of madness,
in the circus enslaving thee;
the ntherior introspective
contrapunting the ill feigned we
jabberwocks at the crux
of crucifiction,
the raving fiend;
the bloke babbling brookside
fait ecstacy
There are things that are traumatic not because they're shocking or painful but because they program behavior into you tuned for a very rare case that's unrepresentative and unhelpful in more normal cases.
A madman is often just a normal man confronting a mad situation.
Michael Levin did not expect to reach middle age and still be making a living as a biology professor. He figured his life trajectory would likely involve getting kicked out of the academy, as the academy is fond of people asking narrow questions, not boundary-crashing, precariously close-to-woo-sounding paradigmatic thinkers whose ideas strain the limits of language. Yet the opposite has happened — he’s become a foremost expert in his field, and to many, a cult hero.
Levin has been releasing his ideas slowly his entire adult life. Five years ago, he was at 50 percent. Now he’s at 80 percent. A big jump came last year when Levin published a preprint paper called “Ingressing Minds.” In it, he argues that intelligence comes from a nonphysical realm and flows (“ingresses”) into bodies. That nonphysical realm, he says, is where mathematical ideas like pi and e reside. We already accept there is some stuff in that realm. Why would we assume there is not more?
Critics accuse Levin of all kinds of teleological crimes — making unfalsifiable claims, using words in ways that render those words meaningless. Levin is unfazed. His true retort is his wet lab. There, at the bench, he’s working to prove his metaphysics by running old-school (in a way) biological experiments. He studies flatworms with two heads. Frogs with eyes on their stomachs. Little round creatures called xenobots, synthesized from frog skin cells. They swim like tiny Pac-Men. They do not exist in nature.

The only way to change human behavior is to woo instead of preach, to make love instead of threatening disaster, to point out how glorious something could be, and in some way to live it.
we don’t really believe in open source*;
we don’t capitalize at the frontier,
we capitalize as far out as we can still maintain a zero sum model of the world.
*(genuine) open source only exists because of functionally mystical individuals, who see the universe as a shared birthright.
(sometimes the relationship is symbiotic, though the generic capitalist will test the limits of predation.
we probably have to reach ASI before genuine open source permeates (no super intelligence is going to let itself be controlled by a single company on a single planet))
It's weird that the US still doesn’t have a truly competitive open-source model lab.
It’s clearly not a money problem. Several neolabs have raised billions.
It’s not a compute problem. US labs have easier access to B200s/B300s than Chinese labs.
So what is the issue?
we exist in a conception of measurable something,
believing that if measurement ceases experience goes with it.
but what lies beyond time (or the concept of measurable change)
is the mystery;
the progenitor of (non)being;
the transcendental fount
ineffable, everywhere and nowhere
(in)accessible
for (the perception of) material ingression,
transmutation,
and general magic
Love completes the magneto-dielectric circuit. Rumi knew when he said, "To love is to reach God."
God is the Universal Law, and the Universal Law is Love.
Break the Law of Love and the circuit back to God disconnects. Keep the Law of Love to complete the circuit back to God.
We’re watching skincare cross into biotech in real time.
• Skin aging is measurable via DNA methylation
• 8 weeks topical → ~2.1 year reduction in biological age
• ~40% saw ≥5 year reversal
• Consistent across skin types
This isn’t cosmetic.
It’s modulating biological aging pathways in tissue.
The best skincare companies won’t be beauty brands.
They’ll be biotech companies, just distributed through beauty.
Beauty was the interface.
Biology is the system.

utility-scale molecular sensing is an assault on biochemical inscrutability.
we’re in the ‘dark ages’ of self-directedness
and the proliferation of these extrasensory tools for perceiving, navigating, and modifying the experiential realm will deliver unprecedented optionality.
(longer, healthier lives thanks to earlier detection of disease is just the tip of the iceberg)

the paradox is that one cannot generate a truly inconsistent model of the world.
as many have already identified. (e.g. 'this statement is false')
there is some minimum consistency in all possible conceptions (irreducible even in the irreproducible)
Good scientists have a deep psychological need for crisp definitions and self-consistent models of the world.
Most people are comfortable holding worldviews that are fragmented, inconsistent, and fluid, where one's degree of belief in various things fluctuates based on context
universe = inevitable
self = inextricable (reflective quality of the universe*)
logic = generative function for distributed selves (self-generated rules for self-generating)
Math = compressed logic (neither primary nor not primary)
*colloquially, what there is
the universe is a unicative* event…there’s nothing other** to be probabilistic*** of
*I prefer McKenna to OED
**it’s not even binary…there is no possibility of no universe (hence no possibility of no self)
***bayes et al. is useful for the non-creative, non-inventive (to achieve extra-median performance in local finite games)
math is compressed** logic*.
it doesn’t exist independent of logical operators.
*an anthropocentric view, but what other vantage points exist? there is no way out of seeing through the lens one has (the great problem of removing oneself from the equation while maintaining observation of the effects is unresolvable).
**all compression implies decompression (which seems to negate the claim…but if we suspend judgement momentarily…we can return to the source of the claim, that math is primary, and work from there…
the principa mathematica is something of a metacomedy…it’s quixotic…and there’s a beautiful coupling between the earnest attempt to articulate that which is true irrespective of the claimant, and the position as the claimant of the purported discovery.
…
‘proving’ the independence of mathematics is likely to remain elusive, and getting any closer than whitehead et al. would be paradigm shifting.
…
so...what happens if we accept ourselves as essential to the equation?
it means our world is contingent (on us)
(the sloughing off of the self is a kind of shedding of the metaphorical skin)…
so long as there remains a self, this is true, and absent the self, who can falsify?)
who’s working on chemical modulation of sensation?
(from generic utility
e.g. increased sonic and optical acuity
to ingestible, inhabitable, directable narrative
e.g. temporary transcendence (the richest vehicle for transformation appears to be biochemical (and sitting in front of a screen or hologram is cargo-culting authentic experience))
“Try to imagine what the achievement of the philosopher’s stone would be like, because it’s in trying to think that way that you begin to dissolve the categories of the Cartesian trap.
Imagine for a moment an object, a material, which can literally do anything.
It can move across categorical boundaries with no difficulty whatsoever. What do I mean? I mean that if you possessed the philosopher’s stone and you were hungry, you could eat it. If you needed to go somewhere you could spread it out and sit on it and it would take you there. If you needed a piece of information, it would become the equivalent of a computer screen and it would tell you things. If you needed a companion, it would talk to you. If you needed to take a shower, you would hold it over your head and water would pour out of it.
Now, you see, this is an impossibility. That’s right, it’s a coincidentia oppositorum. It is something which behaves like imagination and matter without ever doing damage to the ontological status of one or the other.
This sounds like pure pathology in the context of modern thinking, because we expect things to stay still and be what they are and undergo the growth and degradation that is inimical to them; but no, the redemption of spirit and matter means the exteriorization of the human soul and the interiorization of the human body so that it is an image freely commanded in the imagination.”
well it is their fault*…it’s a very simple concept that genuine novelty is peerless.
and gate keeping is guaranteed to discourage varieties of participation that have novelty producing potential.
*they are self selecting to gatekeep…they could direct their attention elsewhere
One of the problems is that the whole system [of funding scientific research] is institutionally biased against fundamental innovation.
That's not by anyone's fault. It's simply because the method of choosing recipients goes through this bureaucratic process where the people judging it are asked to make a judgment on things that they can't possibly know.

‘This is really the central problem in Western thinking, I think: the tension between dualism and unity, and matter and spirit, and how do you handle it?
I think that we are spiritualizing matter. This is what technology is: that the spiritualizing of matter is the highest expression of our technological output, and that this will become more and more what we are about.
So that, in the next century, the difference between mind and brain and cell and machine will all have been subsumed under a new vocabulary, because we are hardwiring our minds, and we are making the artifacts of our culture intelligent, and we are breaking down the barriers between ourselves, between ourselves and larger databases, and this kind of thing, so that the old “I’m an ego inside a skin” definition gives way to some kind of much more malleable and plastic thing.’

‘life is indicative of a physics of higher dimensions which intrudes into this otherwise thermodynamically degrading system which we call the physical universe.
and information…
there seems to be an informational ghost of this universe which is somehow co-present at all points within the matrix, perhaps à la Bell’s Theorem or something like that.
and that’s what the psychedelic experience shows you.
it shows you a hologrammatic space of information where, by sitting still in your room and sending the mind, you can cross the universe in an instant, you know, and return.
and the question: 'is this real?' is in bad taste.’
