@JuanG_Arango He's right. Senegal was a better team than Belgium as well, but their goalkeeper's catastrophic error gave Belgium a lifeline. And to their credit, they have grabbed that opportunity.
@bokkechoi@Kevin_Kinkead As have the atmospheres created by our own supporters. Almost all of the "headline news" has had to do with antics away from stadiums, like Scotland's partying and the Viking Row. But well spotted, you really seem to have your finger on the pulse of this country.
@KniesUrBeak@QBgami Lol I'm not. Nor am I shitting on our players. We lost, I'm an adult. But we're not that far removed from your nation engaging in the same behavior after getting silver in the olympics.
@RGonzalezCBS This would have been great banter if they hadn't wailed about it beforehand. Clearly, they were bothered, so clapping back about it after (when they had threatened to use it as an excuse for a loss) is just weak imo.
@arlowhite That no one seemed to show up and that we never looked likely. Sluggish, tentative performance that saw Belgium winning an overwhelming number of the 50/50 battles. But it was an overall positive tournament, just would have liked to have gone down with more fight.
@NealGardner_ And, I should add - the QF was seen as a stretch goal - attainable, but would take a big result. We didn't get that. R16 is simultaneously a bit disappointing, since there's no progress from last time, but also fully warranted on the overall performance.
@NealGardner_ The level of engagement by casuals was unprecedented. You capture a small percentage of them and the sport continues its upward trajectory here. Onward.
@ChildersRadio@Paul_Phillips20 This is the only response that someone with an England flag in their username can muster. An assumption that anyone from the US must have just recently tuned in.
Whatever the result winds up being, this Balogun episode has to be the record drama level for a round of 16 game involving two teams with virtually no chance at winning the entire tournament
Disgraceful.
Not content with FIFA overturning the red card, USA pundits are now bragging that the USMNT will be aided by a "12th man" tonight in Seattle. This is against all FIFA rules and regulations.
Does their corruption and disrespect for football know no bounds????
@Kevin_Kinkead This is the same, tired discourse we get for daring to have an opinion in our accent. We couldn't possibly understand because we're yanks. There are millions of us that watch this sport every week and have been doing so for decades (related: yikes I am old now)
@myactualbrain@Kevin_Kinkead To have opened the internet today, you'd have thought that we were uniquely expected to flagellate as a result of one of the consequences of a fairly dubious red card having been removed.
@myactualbrain@Kevin_Kinkead Our federation threatened to challenge the improper use of VAR protocols before CAS and FIFA "suspended" the red card suspension. Trump also called his buddy, but most reporting attributes little to that (only the idiot himself is claiming as much).
@JuanG_Arango I think the perception here is worse than the reality. Multiple independent reports indicated that US Soccer's appeal and FIFA's "independent" review had already begun before Trump's call to Gianni. Trump is an idiot & he's mostly proved that in what he's said about this incident
@kkfla737 I think we're tired of being talked down to by those "hotshots." They tell us Balogun's sending off was clear, but virtually no pundits argued that at the time. It's all revisionist because Trump got involved and we're a lightning rod even without him
@24thminute@TaylorTwellman It was a dubious red card that resulted from the improper use of VAR (by referee previously investigated for match fixing for issuing phantom reds). The process that got us here was horrible, but the result in the end was correct.
