Selling by mail, short version:
Insured and tracked, never regular post. Photograph and weigh before sealing. Use a buyer who quotes AFTER weighing and returns it free if you say no.
Anyone rushing you is telling on themselves.

Gold is off its highs, and people read that as "wait."
But the chain in your drawer is still worth roughly 15% more than it was last September. That's real money sitting in a box.
Get it weighed. Then decide.

Hard truth about diamond resale:
A diamond typically resells for a fraction of what it cost at retail. The markup went to the store, not into the stone.
That's not a scam — it's how retail works. Just go in knowing it, and get more than one offer.
Three things move gold more than anything else:
Real interest rates. The dollar. Central bank buying.
Note what's missing — jewelry demand, mining output, and whatever headline ran this morning. Those matter at the margin. Those three set the trend.
Old class ring in a drawer?
Most are 10k or 14k gold, and they're heavier than they look — a big stone setting hides a lot of metal.
A class ring is often the single most valuable piece of scrap gold a household owns. Worth weighing.
Gold is roughly 22% below its all-time high.
That record was $5,602 on January 28th. If someone tells you gold is "at record highs" today, they're quoting last winter.
Check the number before you act on the headline.
Karat and carat are different words doing different jobs.
KARAT measures gold purity out of 24. 14k is 58.5% gold.
CARAT measures a gemstone's weight. One carat is 0.2 grams.
A 14k ring with a 1ct diamond uses both, and neither tells you anything about the other.
Gold-to-silver ratio: about 66.
It takes roughly 66 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold today. A year ago it took closer to 86.
Silver has outrun gold over twelve months, and the ratio shows it in one number. #silver
Check the date on your old change.
US dimes, quarters and half dollars dated 1964 or earlier are 90% silver. Kennedy halves from 1965 to 1970 are 40%.
A jar of pre-'65 coins is worth many times its face value. Don't spend it at the grocery store.
Silver is around $66 — still about 46% below the $121 record it set in January.
It's also up close to 50% over the past year.
Both are true. "Silver is up" versus "silver is down" depends entirely on where you start counting. #silver
Yes, dental gold is worth money.
Crowns and bridges often run 10k to 22k, sometimes with palladium or platinum in the alloy. Some modern ones are mostly base metal, so it needs testing.
The porcelain doesn't matter. A refiner burns that off.
Why the Fed matters to gold right now:
Markets expect US rates to stay higher for longer. Gold pays no interest, so every point of yield on bonds makes holding it a little less attractive.
That, more than anything, is why gold has cooled this month.
See "EPNS" stamped on the back of a spoon or tray?
That's electroplated nickel silver. Despite the name, nickel silver contains no silver at all — it's copper, nickel and zinc under a thin plate.
Sterling is marked 925 or "STERLING." That's the one worth weighing.
Gold is down about 7% over the past month.
It's still up roughly 15% from a year ago.
A pullback doesn't make old jewelry worthless — it makes it worth a bit less than last month and a good deal more than last year. Know the number before you decide. #gold
A scam pattern worth recognizing:
A "buyer" quotes well above everyone else. You ship. Then the number drops — your gold supposedly tested lower.
Protection: photograph and weigh everything before it leaves, and only use buyers who return it free if you decline.
Settling an estate? Don't tip the whole jewelry box into one "scrap" pile.
Signed pieces, older diamonds and designer marks can be worth several times melt value.
Sort first. Photograph everything. Have the marked pieces looked at on their own.
Platinum is up 33% on the year, quietly climbing while gold pulls back.
Industrial demand is forecast to grow around 9% a year toward 2.24 million ounces. South Africa still mines roughly 80% of world supply.
Different metal, different drivers. #platinum
What actually happens to scrap gold after you sell it:
Sorted by karat, weighed, melted, assayed for exact purity, refined toward .999, cast into a new bar.
That's why buyers price on weight and purity, not on how pretty the piece is. It becomes an ingot either way.
Central banks bought 289 tonnes of gold in Q2 — a record for any second quarter, up 62% on the year before.
Poland took 51 tonnes. China, 33.
Prices have wobbled since. Their buying didn't. Different time horizon entirely. #gold
Two numbers people confuse constantly:
An INSURANCE appraisal is what replacing the piece at retail would cost. Deliberately high.
A RESALE offer is what someone hands you today.
Both are honest. They answer completely different questions.
