Marketers & Creators: This is a big deal.
CEO TikTok’s, Shou Zi Chew, is officially in DC and is slated to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday.
If you’ve been on TT today, you’ve probably seen Chew appeal to TikTok users for support.
I've spent 13 years working in content marketing for large companies with multiple million-dollar budgets. 💰
So, when my family decided to start a small (and awesome) DTC business with zero marketing dollars, it was quite a transition and a hefty challenge.
We don't have a big budget to toss around. We don't have much time for trial and error. And we don't have the bandwidth and expertise of a full-fledged marketing and ad team.
But, here's what we do have...
1. 📚 An incredible product.
Our founder has been a children's librarian for 20+ years. She created Reading With RIK as a unique solution to some of the biggest problems children in her library and reading camps were experiencing—getting interested in the story, reading comprehension, and falling in love with reading.
Reading With RIK leverages novelty seeking through story-related prizes that kids open as they progress through the book. Each prize also contains a think piece to help with comprehension. Basically, it's a party in a box that helps kids love reading, and it's awesome.
The product is based on years of action research and has already helped hundreds of kids become avid readers. If you've tried it, you love it. End of story.
2. 🤩 User-generated content galore.
My Baby Boomer parents were ahead of their time when it came to capturing content. Throughout developing and fine-tuning this product, they collected images, review videos, and written reviews from kids, parents, and grandparents raving about Reading With RIK. This is helping us with social content now.
3. 👯 Consistency.
We won't win marketing overnight with expensive paid ads (although that would be totally amazing).
But, we will win with audience research, well-researched content and SEO strategy, and consistent content production.
4. 🎨 Creativity, industry expertise, and data.
Luckily, our small team includes a copywriter, designer, creative director/video ad producer. This makes it a lot easier to create assets that slap.
Our primary founder knows everything about children's literature, improving reading skills, and children's education. This helps with product development and content creation.
We also have a literal PhD rocket scientist on the team. If he can figure out how to make rocket fuel (or whatever 🤷🏻♀️), he can figure out SEO, marketing data, attribution, etc.
🌈 We have a loooooooooong way to go and some capital to raise, but as a marketer, it's very fun to strip down to the bare bones, focus our efforts (because we have to), and rely on the goodness of our product as we grow.
If you've started a scrappy business, I'd love your insight, thoughts, expertise, advice, etc.
And please repost/share this. Let's bring some organic exposure to Reading With RIK (linked below)👇.
