After returning home from (NYSC), I was surprised to learn that a friend of my dad was looking for a wife for his nephew. My dad assured them that he wouldn’t pressure me into anything because he wanted me to meet them so I could make my own decision.

One afternoon, I went to cash a check for my dad. When I returned to his office, I saw him with that friend. He introduced me, and the man started talking about his nephew. He described him as a good man, a lecturer, and someone who doesn’t womanize. They were looking for a wife for him.

I asked this man about his nephew’s age, and he said he was 37. That was my first red flag, since I was 23 at the time. With my dad’s permission, they set a date for us to meet. I thought it was going to be a date, but instead, he took me to his nephew’s house.

When we arrived, his uncle introduced me, then excused us to talk. We chatted for a while, and I got to ask him a few questions.

To cut the long story short, he said he wouldn’t allow me to wear leggings or trousers because they’re too revealing, and he expected me to stay home and raise the kids. He believes women shouldn’t work after marriage.

He made a bunch of sexist comments about what women should and shouldn’t do. What really bothered me was his constant bragging about renting a two-bedroom apartment because he was ready to settle down.

After that whole meeting, I told my dad I wasn’t interested. When his uncle kept insisting my dad told him to stop, that my mind was already made up!
There were so many things I didn’t know or understand then, but one thing I knew was I wasn’t going to be with a controlling man who was going to dictate what my life should be.
