"We have no government armed with the power which is capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other."
John Adams- Mass. Militia
John Adams wasn't the Senate Majority Leader--as alleged by some today--although he helped define & fullfilled the role of "President" of the Senate--as defined in Article 1, Section 3 of The Constitution. The 1st official Senate Majority Leader was Henry Cabot Lodge in 1920. A major challenge of President Washington's initial administration was fulfilling and defining what the Constitution actually meant with respect to the set up, and practical day-to-day business of the US government.

Sen Lee, There's a post by @glennbeck quoting you that needs clarification since it's misleading some on the possibility of the Vice President fulfilling the dual role as Senate Majority Leader, which of course is a major violation of the Seperation Of Powers doctrine.
My earlier response below:

Is this directly applicable today? How?
"when we suffer, or are exposed to the same miseries by a government, which we might expect in a country without government, our calamity is heightened by reflecting that we furnish the means by which we suffer."

"God...gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? ...they are not to be violated but with his wrath...I tremble for my country...God is just: his justice cannot sleep for ever."

John Witherspoon, signer of the Declaration Of Independence, President of College Of New Jersey (Princeton) & Presbyterian minister cautions us in his classic sermon "The Dominion of Providence over the Passions of Men" that civil & religious liberties are inextricably connected.

Birthed in blood, our constitution was ordained and established in order to "secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity"
We're now the "Posterity."
Samuel Adams tells us what the Minutemen were prepared to do (& did).
What are we prepared to do?
It's up to us
