Have you been to Bauchi State? There's a Local govt there called Toro!

Before we even talk about farming, Toro is one of those places where its geography tells you a lot about the people who live there.

Located in Bauchi State and stretching towards the Plateau border, Toro is one of Nigeria’s largest LGAs by land area.

Its communities spread across wide open landscapes, rocky areas, valleys and river plains, giving the area a very distinct character within Bauchi State.

Interesting facts about Toro LGA

•Toro experiences a typical Guinea Savanna climate, with a clear rainy and dry season. The rainy months bring enough water for farming, while the dry season can become very hot and dusty. But around the river valleys and Fadama areas, water remains available for farmers, allowing some communities to continue growing crops even when the rains have stopped.

• Around communities such as Tilden Fulani, tomato and pepper farming is a major activity. During harvest, fresh tomatoes, tatase and hot peppers are gathered into large baskets and transported to other parts of the country.

• The wide farmland also makes Toro an important producer of maize, millet, sorghum and cowpeas. These are some of the crops that form the everyday food system of northern Nigeria, making Toro an important link between rural farms and larger food markets.

• Toro is also part of the old northern groundnut belt. Farmers grow groundnuts not only for eating but also for processing into groundnut oil, kuli-kuli and animal feed. So one harvest can end up serving several different industries.

• Sesame, locally known as benne seed, is another crop quietly growing in Toro. Unlike crops mainly grown for local consumption, sesame has strong commercial and export value, giving farmers another way to earn beyond the usual grains.

• The wetter lowlands around Toro also support crops you might not immediately associate with the area, including sugar cane and sweet potatoes.

• And it isn’t only crops. Toro also sits along important grazing and livestock routes, with cattle, goats and sheep raised across its communities. This makes livestock another major part of the local economy, supplying meat, milk and other animal products to surrounding areas.

• Tilden Fulani is more than a farming community; during harvest periods, it becomes a meeting point between farmers, traders and transporters.

• What makes Toro interesting is the way crop farming and livestock production exist side by side. Farming communities and pastoral communities depend on the same land and water systems.

Toro may not be one of the places people immediately mention when they talk about Nigerian agriculture, but look closer and the picture changes.

From dry-season tomatoes to grains, groundnuts, sesame and livestock, Toro is quietly doing a lot of the work that keeps food moving.
