Prime Minister Andy Burnham says he'll oversee the biggest change to Britain in 40 years - with a new political and economic model.

In his first speech on the steps of Downing Street without a podium, he pledges:

- To provide immediate cost of living support, with plans and how they'll be funded announced from tomorrow to give people "breathing space"

- A ten-year plan to reverse privatisation and deindustrialisation

- To honour defence spending plans announced by his predecessor and stick to the fiscal rules

- To end rough sleeping

- To "bring back hope"

Sono d’accordo. In America per ogni seggio parlamentare ci sono delle primarie in cui i cittadini, tra vari candidati, scelgono il candidato ufficiale del partito. Dovremmo fare così anche noi. Facciamo le primarie e chi le vince entra in lista, è un modo per sviare la legge.

Ieri, alle Primarie delle Idee in Puglia, ho voluto rilanciare una proposta sulla quale credo il centrosinistra e, comunque, la casa riformista debbano aprire una riflessione seria, anche alla luce della sempre minore partecipazione al voto delle cittadine e dei cittadini.
Se la legge elettorale continuerà a negare ai cittadini il diritto di scegliere i propri parlamentari, dobbiamo assumerci la responsabilità di farlo noi.
Per questo auspico, innanzitutto, che il centrosinistra voti a favore dell’introduzione delle preferenze quando la legge elettorale sarà discussa al Senato. Ma se ciò non dovesse accadere, dobbiamo adottare regole chiare e trasparenti: selezionare i candidati attraverso le parlamentarie, superare definitivamente il sistema delle pluricandidature, che finisce per indebolire il rapporto di fiducia tra elettori ed eletti, e fare in modo che ogni candidata e ogni candidato si presenti nel proprio territorio di riferimento.
Solo così possiamo ricostruire un rapporto di fiducia tra cittadini e istituzioni, restituendo agli elettori il diritto di scegliere davvero chi li rappresenta e ai rappresentanti la responsabilità di rispondere alla propria comunità.
