@Virgini23166650@ITalkOfChrist I agree that if a being cannot possibly fail to exist, it is necessary. My argument is that saying every intelligence “simply is” does not establish that necessity. An eternal material being still has a composition and unity that call for explanation.
@Virgini23166650@ITalkOfChrist That is what I’m challenging. Declaring all intelligences necessary does not make them necessary. If an intelligence is material, its existence depends on its composition and unity. Calling it eternal does not explain why those elements must exist and be united.
@Virgini23166650@ITalkOfChrist I agree that “contingent” means capable of not existing. My argument is that calling a material intelligence eternal does not establish that its existence is necessary.
@Virgini23166650@ITalkOfChrist D&C 93:29 describes intelligence as uncreated; it does not say contingent beings are impossible. Eternity and independence are different claims. If a spirit is material, what accounts for its composition and unity?
@Virgini23166650@ITalkOfChrist You're saying contingent is not contingent which is incoherent. If you take away the elements their gods do not exist. There's 2 categories: contingent and not-contingent. If they have prior dependencies, it is contingent regardless of any denial.
@Virgini23166650@ITalkOfChrist D&C 93:29 says intelligence was not created or made. But eternal existence does not establish independence. D&C 131:7 says all spirit is matter. What accounts for its material composition and unity?
@Wafflewarf@JackMoRebellion God’s perfect self-knowledge is eternal. The Son, the Word, is eternally generated by the Father, not brought into existence at a moment in time. Otherwise, there would be a time when God lacked his perfect self-knowledge.
@Wafflewarf@JackMoRebellion Eternal generation does not mean the Son was made from material or brought into existence. The Father eternally communicates the whole divine nature to the Son. The Son receives that nature from the Father without beginning, division, or dependence on anything outside God.
@Virgini23166650@ITalkOfChrist their being has contingencies. He depends upon matter, space, time and eternal law. He is down stream of those realities so by definition is not necessary.
You could say he's conditionally necessary for forming the world but not necessary in his being
@Virgini23166650@ITalkOfChrist their logic follows to reality/elements being Necessary. So they do believe that, they just don't say it explicitly.

@Virgini23166650@ITalkOfChrist a contingent being just means it has external dependencies. That's a fact of reality, not something they can rationally deny. Saying intelligences, which are matter, are intelligent and self existent is an assertion, not a demonstration...
@Wafflewarf@JackMoRebellion saying 'nonsense' isnt an argument. The son is generated because He is the 'Word' the self-knowledge of the Father.
The known and knower are distinct but are of the same substance. Hence distinction in relation.
@Wafflewarf@JackMoRebellion if the church you go to does not exist in every century as a visible binding authority, then you are not obeying God's command.
Otherwise, show that God said, 'take it to the church UNTIL...'
@Wafflewarf@JackMoRebellion God commanded you to go to the church he established on peter for dispute resolution.
He gave the command, 'take it to the church'. Therefore that church must exist perpetually. Why do you not go to the church he established?
@Wafflewarf@JackMoRebellion Nothing defined God before creation. He simply is. That is what Christians mean when we say God is existence itself: he does not receive existence from anything else. Everything else receives existence from him.
@Wafflewarf@JackMoRebellion God choosing to create does not in any way make his divine nature contingent upon nature. The latter of which is an affect of the will and the former a fact of his essence.
