I picked up my keys. "I'm going to the rooftop bar.”

She stepped in front of the door. "Why?"

I smiled. "Because I want to see what's worth three weeks of lying to me."

Her face went pale....

My sister came home at 11:40 p.m. I was standing in the kitchen, and she froze when she saw me.

"Why are you still up?"

"I was waiting for you."

She said she'd been working late at the office. I looked at her. "Really?"

"Yes."

I called her coworker Dana. She answered immediately. "Hey, girl!"

I asked, "Was my sister at the office with you tonight?”

There was a pause. Then she said, "Yeah, she was."...

Then Dana called back, her voice shaking. "Please don't make this a whole thing."

I asked, "How long have you been covering for her?"

Silence. Then, quietly: "A few weeks."

"A few weeks?”

She said she just needed space. That she'd tell you when she was ready."

I looked at my sister. She wouldn't meet my eyes.

Dana kept going. "She's not doing anything wrong, she just—"

I cut her off. "You don't lie for someone who isn't hiding something."

My sister finally spoke. "Dana, hang up."...

The company didn't just close the complaint — they added his stop to a new "duty of care" training module for other drivers.

At the review meeting, someone asked if he regretted the time it cost him.

He smiled. "My job is to hit numbers," he said. "But some days the job in front of you isn't the job on your clipboard."

Nobody in the room pushed back on that.

A delivery driver was reported to his company for going twenty minutes off-route... until his manager saw the dashcam footage.

Customers were complaining online.

His late deliveries had piled up for the day.

Corporate flagged his account for review.

He didn't defend himself. He just kept driving his route the next morning like nothing happened.

Going off-route without authorization is a fireable offense at most delivery companies....

He explained what happened.

He'd caught a glimpse of her through the truck's side mirror as he passed the house, and had to decide right there.

Keep moving and stay on schedule, protecting his delivery numbers…

Or stop, lose the time, and risk being reported for going off-route.

He stopped.

He called an ambulance and waited with her until it arrived, which is exactly the twenty minutes that got him flagged.

If he'd kept driving, she might have stayed there another hour before anyone noticed....

The police later confirmed she'd called in the exact time window that led to the arrest.

A week later, she helped me install steel mesh under the entire porch.

As she handed me a spare key to her place, she smiled.

"Now you've got somewhere safe if it ever happens again.”

I smiled back.

Then I noticed something written on the key tag.

Next door — always open.

For the first time in weeks, I finally exhaled.

My Neighbor: "Why did you install cameras in the nursery?"

Me: "Because someone's been coming into my house while I'm at work."

My neighbor looked at me carefully. "Are you sure?"

Me: "Every day I come home, the baby monitor is unplugged and plugged back in a different outlet. Nothing's missing. But someone's been in there."

She followed me inside and examined the room.

Then she noticed something.

My Neighbor: "When did this start?"

Me: "Three weeks ago."

She went pale....

The police arrived minutes later and pulled a man out of the crawl space. He'd been sneaking in through a loose porch panel for over a month, watching the family from below.

But the biggest twist came when my neighbor looked at me and admitted something.

She'd noticed the panel was loose two weeks earlier — and instead of telling me, she'd been quietly watching my house herself every night, waiting to catch whoever it was.

I stared at her.

"So you knew?"

She nodded.

"I didn't want to scare you until I was sure."...
