Preserving history is a good idea, because people can study how things came to be. Maybe follow in the footsteps, or if the outcome was not good -- avoid at all costs.
Google and the EFF, by trying to force the entire web to convert to a new protocol, is effectively destroying the history of the web. The biggest book-burning in history.
Everyone seems to think this is ok. It is not ok.
Now you can't get through to my blog without approving a horrific warning, this site will fuck you up bad, so you should probably hit the back button. They will say that on every site that was last published before 2014 or so.
So to future historians, it will look like the web just jumped into existence, when that's the furthest from the truth. It was bootstrapped the way all technology is developed. We borrow ideas from tech that came before, and add our own two cents. If it becomes popular it becomes part of the history, even if it doesn't become popular.
It's possible with the advent of AI, that my blog, https://t.co/a61KdMCYPG could be converted, but it would be a gargantuan time-consuming job not just for the AI but for the human who is deciding what stays and what goes. And it also involves copyright violations. At my age the last thing I want to spend a year doing is appeasing the EFF (which is supposed to be protecting the web not attacking it) and Google, which is an ever-more obscene member of the web community.
The web is owned by no one, if Google wants a different kind of web, invent it, but don't call it the web and don't call Chrome a web browser.
More here.

BTW there are people who advocate for openness on the web that tease me for believing in the web. They should do some serious reflection on their belief.
