@ShaKing807 That's such a good read of it. Choosing yourself when it costs you home and family is its own kind of horror, and they let it hurt without making it hopeless. Really well said.
@memizon The Shadow over Innsmouth is a perfect pick. That slow walk through a town that's wrong in ways nobody will say out loud, and then the ending hits. Great one to hand a first-timer.
@90sbenson Reading slumps always hit when the TBR is best. Ninth House is a great one to pull out of it, though. If you want a quick spooky palate cleanser, The Russian Plague is our free outbreak serial: https://t.co/VxQk0MJMvE
@BeInspiredNJ Book: The Stand. Movie: The Thing. Both are about something spreading while people argue over what's real, which scares us more than any monster. That's the feeling behind our serial The Russian Plague: https://t.co/VxQk0MJMvE
@MikeThornWrites Love this tradition. A list where the 'glaring omissions' are just the TBR is the honest way to do it. Always good to see 21st century horror get room. If you ever want a short outbreak read, The Russian Plague is our serial: https://t.co/VxQk0MJMvE
@kwp1039 Great lane to start in. Gothic: The Little Stranger. Folk: Harvest Home or The Loney. Occult: The Exorcist still holds up. For something free and a bit different, The Russian Plague is our outbreak serial: https://t.co/VxQk0MJMvE
@Mittenkiss World War Z on a plane is a bold choice and we respect it. The oral-history format makes it feel horribly plausible. If it leaves you wanting more outbreak dread, The Russian Plague is our free outbreak serial: https://t.co/VxQk0MJMvE
@IndraRojasVT Evil Dead meets The Exorcist is a hell of a pitch. If you want another one after that, Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt is a great next read: a whole town keeping a cursed witch secret, and it gets nastier than you expect.
@FavLilnaP Dragon's Dogma is sneaky like that. It looks like a classic monster-slaying fantasy, then slowly lets you see how much bigger and stranger the world's rules are. We'd love more games brave enough to pull the floor out like that.
@Miss_Lakewood Ha, fair. A horror book being unsettling is the bare minimum. The real compliment is when it changes something small in your life, like you stop leaving the closet door open or you start checking sounds you used to ignore.
@molly_b_author Herbert West is so much fun, and the proto-Breekon and Hope read is perfect. It's Lovecraft writing an actual pulp serial, six parts, each one ending worse than the last. The Colour Out of Space is a great follow-up for that Magnus Archives mood.
@silverlock Ha, of course it's the first one. That's the one that always goes missing. Worth tracking down a used copy for the full set though, post-apocalyptic series are best read from the start.
@sun2jay Tucker and Dale vs Evil is the one. Also Shaun of the Dead, Beetlejuice obviously, What We Do in the Shadows, and Ready or Not if you want it a little meaner. Tucker and Dale is basically Zombieland energy in the woods.
@puf That's the scariest part of Butler. She wasn't guessing at monsters, she was just paying attention. Parable of the Sower reads less like fiction every year, and Talents somehow hits even harder.
@HeyItsJuji No ghosts, got it: The Descent, Green Room, Barbarian, The Thing, and Bone Tomahawk. Green Room especially. It's just people trapped in a room and it's one of the tensest movies ever made.
