8/ The vise: rising seas, intensifying storms, retreating insurers, and a debt buffer that's real but thin.
The Bahamas isn't doomed — its recovery has been remarkable. But it's in a race between adapting and the physics.
The geography that made it rich is the geography that makes it fragile.

How the Bahamas Actually Got Rich (And Why One Storm Could Undo It).
1/ The Bahamas is one of the richest countries in the Western Hemisphere. No income tax. No capital gains tax. Billionaires' yachts, 12.5M tourists a year.
It got rich almost entirely by accident.
And 80% of it sits less than 5 feet above the sea. 🧵
7/ Sept 1, 2019: Hurricane Dorian. A Cat 5 that stalled over the islands for 48 hours. 185mph winds. A 25-foot surge onto land that flat.
Damage: $3.4 billion — a quarter of GDP. Gone in two days.
Insurers paid ~4 years of premiums in one storm. Reinsurers started leaving.
8/ So what's it like to live in Ceuta?
Sunshine, safety, fierce pride (locals proudly call themselves caballas — mackerel 🐟). And a permanent paradox: European & African, rich & stuck, calm & on edge.

🧵 Ceuta: the Spanish city where you can't drive home (a thread)
1/
Imagine you live in Spain. You use euros. You pay Spanish taxes. But you can't drive to the rest of your country — because it's across a sea.
The only land you can drive into is Morocco. A different country.
Welcome to Ceuta: 84,000 Europeans living in Africa. 🧵
7/
Then there's the fence. Most days: boring.
Then July 2026: 50,000–60,000 people surged the border in hours. At least 67 died. Spain sent the army and built a 500m sea barrier.
On one side, the EU. On the other, a fraction of the income. That gradient is the engine.
8/ So what does Ceuta cost?
Not the subsidies. Spain pays by holding a permanently open position a neighbour can call at any time, at almost no cost, with no fingerprints.
Portugal took Ceuta in 1415 as a tollbooth. The trade left. It became a fortress that needed feeding.

Why Spain Owns Two Cities in Africa (And What Ceuta Really Costs).
1/
Spain owns two cities in Africa.
Walk out of Ceuta, cross one fence, and GDP per capita falls by roughly five times. Against the Moroccan provinces next door, far more.
That fence is the EU's only land border on the African continent.
A thread on what it actually costs 🧵

Now the encirclement. Nador West Med opens this year: 51 billion dirhams mobilised, 3.4m containers a year by 2027.
Tangier Med already moved 11.1m containers in 2025. Algeciras: 5.3m.
Spain's own port authority now documents its transshipment traffic leaving for Morocco.
