Fifteen years ago, a few of us sat in a small room in Lagos asking one question. Why should a document that decides whether a child gets a classroom or a clinic gets drugs be written in a language only a handful of people can read?

That question became BudgIT.
We had no money and no proof that any of it would work. What we had was a conviction that public money belongs to the public, and that citizens deserve to see it in plain language. We built the first budget visuals on borrowed time and stubborn hope.

Today BudgIT turns 15.

In that time we have turned thousands of pages of fiscal documents into things people can actually understand. We have sent Tracka officers into communities to check whether the borehole that was paid for actually exists, and to sit with citizens who had never been told that a project in their ward carried their name and their money. We have published on debt, revenue, subsidy, and state finances when it was uncomfortable to do so. We have argued with governments and we have worked with governments. Both were necessary. The work now lives in Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Senegal, and the idea travels further than we do.

What I am most proud of is not any single report. It is that budget conversations moved from technical rooms into newsrooms, classrooms, town halls, and timelines. A generation of young citizens now treats fiscal accountability as ordinary civic behaviour. That shift is the real product.

Thank you to every person who has worked at BudgIT and who have backed our work at scale. Thank you to the journalists who ran with our data, the funders who trusted an unproven idea, the community members who showed up for a tracking meeting on a market day, and the public servants who quietly opened doors. Thank you to my cofounders and to everyone who shared an infographic when that was all we had.

The work is unfinished. Debt service still crowds out development. Too many subnational budgets still reveal less than they hide. Money still leaks in the last mile, where citizens feel it most. Fifteen years in, transparency alone is not enough.We continue to persist in service to our communities.

I will repeat this: Baba Ijesha was convicted in a court of law of sexually assaulting a minor. Video evidence formed part of the case against him, and his conviction for the 2021 offences was upheld on appeal.

To this day, there has been no meaningful expression of remorse. Instead, the man publicly doubled down, portraying himself as the victim of a witch hunt.

That is my fundamental problem with him and this campaign to sanitise his image. Where is the accountability?

That is why sensible people should continue to shun him publicly.
