@HMRCcustomers Hi - I’ve recently received 2 letters from HMRC to my address, but I’ve never heard of the person they are addressed to. Should I just return them through the post with “not known at this address”? Am concerned that someone is using my address for nefarious purposes… Thanks
@ArdentArchivis1@AndyBailieComic@sueperkins Agreed. People need to be a little patient with Mastodon while it scales up. I think a *lot* of ppl have been opening accounts in the last 24 hrs…
Right. Time to do this a bit early this year for... reasons.
If you are a small creator who makes things that would be nice christmas presents, REPLY TO THIS TWEET with:
1) Description of what you make/do
2) Pics if possible
3) Link to how people can purchase.
I WILL BOOST YOU
@watsoncomedian @EJ_sketches It’s not as easy:
- if you search in Mastodon, you have to start typing their full address (inc the @ at the start)
- some ppl are putting their Mast. name in their Twttr profile
- once you find someone, look at who they are following and click on them that way
Update: I'm enormous on Mastodon now, one of the main influencers there, over a billion followers; problem solved. If YOU are there please send me your username or whatnot because it doesn't seem easy to find people by name.
My one-tweet Mastodon starter advice:
1. Pick a server where people are likely to post generally about stuff you're most interested in.
2. Follow interesting people on other servers, who will boost interesting stuff into your home feed. THEY are your algorithm.
@watsoncomedian @EJ_sketches Bear in mind that because Mastodon is run by enthusiasts/volunteers, it can crash / slowdown when lots of ppl start moving over (as is likely to happen today & over the weekend).
Fine, I have @[email protected] now. I will say again, if Twitter does become inactive it seems very unlikely I'll be doing what I do in three years' time. Nonetheless, we go on.
@annettedittert Woohoo!!
If its helps, I've collected a bunch of tips and guides over the last couple of weeks here:

@watsoncomedian@SamCsamc @ScreenSelkie @CorryLReilly Bear in mind it’s likely to be laggy at the moment - it’s effectively run by volunteers, and things can slow down whenever there’s a wave of ppl leaving here…
@watsoncomedian@SamCsamc @ScreenSelkie @CorryLReilly Hi Mark - Mastodon is definitely worth trying. It’s starting to build critical mass. Follower numbers are currently lower than here, but growing (and more engaged I think).
@AndyBailieComic@sueperkins Mastodon is great, but bear in mind that it’s effectively run by volunteers. So it may be a bit slow/laggy at the moment - this happens whenever there’s another wave of ppl leaving twitter…
My advice on server selection:
1. Avoid the big ones. At least right now. They'll be getting slammed, and the local feed will be very broad.
2. Run debirdify. It will sure you were people you follow already are.
3. DON'T PANIC. you can move later. Your followers stay followed.
Finally, remember that hashtags are more important as a way of finding content over on Mastodon. They are cross-server.
You can pin/follow ones that consistently show stuff you like. If you like history, for example, #histodon is the hashtag for you.
My one-tweet Mastodon starter advice:
1. Pick a server where people are likely to post generally about stuff you're most interested in.
2. Follow interesting people on other servers, who will boost interesting stuff into your home feed. THEY are your algorithm.
Someone has to say it: Elon Musk has lied for 27 years about his credentials. He does not have a BS in Physics, or any technical field. Did not get into a PhD program. Dropped out in 1995 & was illegal. Later, investors quietly arranged a diploma - but not in science. 🧵1/
