Savannahโs squares werenโt added later to make the city look nicer.
They were there from the beginning.
When James Oglethorpe and the first Georgia colonists arrived in 1733, Savannah was laid out in small neighborhoods called wards. Each one had a public square at the center, with homes nearby and space set aside for churches, government buildings and other public uses.
The first plan had four wards.
As Savannah grew, the city kept repeating the same basic layout.
More houses. Another square. Another ward.
Oglethorpe laid out the first six squares himself, and the city kept using the idea long after he left Georgia. By the 1850s, Savannah had 24 squares.
Twenty-two are still there.
Thatโs a big reason downtown feels the way it does.
You walk a few blocks, the street opens up into trees, benches and paths, then the grid picks up again until you hit the next square.
They werenโt originally designed just as places to sit.
The surrounding lots were part of how each ward worked. Some were reserved for public buildings, while others were divided into residential lots. The layout also made sense for a young colony that still had military concerns and needed to organize people quickly.
Savannah changed a lot around those squares.
It became a major port. Rice and cotton brought enormous wealth into the region, much of it built on slavery. The British occupied the city during the American Revolution. Sherman entered Savannah in December 1864 and later presented the city to Abraham Lincoln as a Christmas gift.
There were major fires in 1796 and 1820. Yellow fever hit the city hard. Buildings disappeared, neighborhoods changed and Savannah eventually spread far beyond the old colonial plan.
The squares stayed.
Johnson Square is one of the originals, laid out in 1733.
Stand there for a few minutes and you can still see the logic of the old plan in the streets and buildings around it.
Then start walking.
You wonโt go far before you reach another square.
Savannah kept using Oglethorpeโs layout for more than a century, which is one reason so much of downtown still feels different from other American cities.
The live oaks, Spanish moss and old houses get most of the attention.
Iโd pay attention to the layout too.
The city was designed in a way that keeps breaking up the streets with small public spaces, and people are still moving through Savannah that way almost 300 years later.
I wouldnโt rush it.
Walk a few blocks. Sit in a square. Keep going.
Savannah makes more sense on foot.

Roman aqueducts were among the greatest engineering achievements of the ancient world. Stretching hundreds of miles across the empire, they carried fresh water from distant springs into cities, military forts, farms, and public baths.
By supplying reliable water to growing populations, aqueducts became one of the foundations of Roman expansion and helped sustain the empire for centuries.
As Rome grew, so did its demand for clean water. The city itself was eventually supplied by 11 major aqueducts stretching a combined distance of nearly 500 miles.
While public baths consumed enormous amounts of water, aqueducts also supplied homes, fountains, workshops, gardens, and drinking water for hundreds of thousands of people.
Contrary to popular belief, Romans did drink aqueduct water, although wine was also widely consumed.
Building an aqueduct required remarkable precision. Roman engineers relied almost entirely on gravity, designing channels that descended only a few feet over many miles.
If the slope was too steep, water would rush through and damage the system. If it was too shallow, the water would stagnate.
Surveyors carefully measured the terrain to maintain a nearly perfect gradient, allowing water to flow continuously without pumps.
Constructing these massive systems demanded enormous resources. Thousands of laborers, soldiers, skilled craftsmen, and enslaved workers built aqueducts throughout the empire, from Britain to North Africa and the Middle East.
New aqueducts often accompanied Roman conquests, providing fresh water to settlements while demonstrating the benefits of Roman engineering and administration.
One reason so many aqueducts still survive is the durability of Roman concrete. Modern research has shown that Roman builders often mixed quicklime into their concrete, creating tiny lime fragments that reacted with water when cracks formed.
These reactions produced new minerals that sealed small fractures, giving the concrete a remarkable ability to repair itself and helping many Roman structures survive for nearly two thousand years.
Although the towering stone arches are the most recognizable parts of Roman aqueducts, they made up only a small portion of the network.
Most aqueducts actually ran underground, where the water remained cooler and was better protected from contamination, sunlight, and algae.
