Key causes of vitamin B12 deficiency:
1. Predominant consumption of vegan or vegetarian diet (as B12 is present in animal based foods only)
2. Use of antacids and metformin can interfere with B12 absorption
3. Presence of abnormal autoantibodies in the gut can block B12 absorption (thus causing B12 deficiency among meat-eaters too)
4. Lack of fortification of foods with B12
