Georgia Tech just posted the biggest revenue year in school history at $175 million, and the way they got there is interesting.

Executive deputy AD Brent Jones broke it down on the Margins of Victory podcast recently. The number climbed from $156 million the year before, a 12% jump in a single year, and it came from just about every direction. The Alexander-Tharpe Fund cleared $100 million for the first time at $110 million, concessions were up 67%, and licensing grew 31%. They also hit 57 sellouts across the department against a goal of 50, the best mark in Georgia Tech history.

What stood out to me was how much of that came from structure rather than one big deal. New AD Ryan Alpert brought a horizontal model over from Tennessee, where the title on your badge matters less than what you can do for the mission. Halfway through the season they named revenue champions across every area, including the business office, compliance, and academics, groups with no obvious job on game day. As Jones put it, "everybody has to be a ticket seller."

That matters with the House settlement, revenue sharing, and true NIL on top of the cap, because the pressure to grow revenue now touches every department. Georgia Tech treated it as everyone's job and got a record out of it. Culture and structure are still one of the most underpriced levers in college sports.

The upside from here is where it gets interesting. Metro Atlanta has 16 Fortune 500 headquarters, including Home Depot, UPS, Delta, and Coca-Cola, and Georgia Tech is the only Power 4 program in the city, sitting in the number seven TV market. Then there is an alumni base north of 200,000, many of them engineers who now run operations and purchasing at exactly those kinds of companies.

Put it together and Georgia Tech is sitting on a commercial network in its own backyard that most schools would have to go build from scratch. The record year is a strong start, and there is plenty of room left to run.

I hope everyone who rushed to judge Jeff Ulbrich for his absence from training camp feels ashamed of themselves today.

While people were speculating and criticizing, Jeff was privately standing beside his wife as she courageously battled cancer. Sadly, she lost that battle, a burden he was carrying while many were questioning his absence.

Rest in peace, Cristina Ulbrich. My prayers are with Jeff, their children, and everyone who loved her. I hope Jeff takes all the time he needs to grieve. Some things are far bigger than football, and there are losses in life that no game can ever replace.
