Did you know the birth of modern computing and AI is directly tied to both the Nazi concentration camps and the Allied victory?

The Nazis owed a lot to IBM, which custom-built and maintained the punch-card machines that allowed them to round up and categorize millions of people. IBM was asked to stop, but they kept going. When researcher Edwin Black finally had them dead to rights with the documents, IBM admitted he was right.

But they were never held accountable. In fact—and this may be the scariest part—when IBM built their modern AI computer to scan hospital records and track medical data, they named it "Watson," after their former CEO Thomas J. Watson, who authorized the dealings with the Nazis.

But at the exact same time, Alan Turing helped build one of the first computers to crack the impossible Nazi Enigma code and help the Allies win the war. He went on to predict the rise of AI that we're currently living in.

Technology is a double-edged sword: in the hands of a free people, it can break the back of a totalitarian regime. In the hands of a surveillance state, it becomes the ultimate tool of control. If we don't learn from history, we'll walk right into the trap a second time.
