SHARĪ‘AH UNDER SIEGE: THE INTERNAL STRUGGLES AND MISCONCEPTIONS FUELING OPPOSITION TO ISLAMIC VALUES IN SOUTHWEST NIGERIA.

The major opposition to Islamic values and institutions comes from within the Muslim community. The average Muslim either does not understand Islam at all, or is driven by liberal ideologies and the quest to please and be accepted by non-Muslims even at the expense of his own faith.

Recently, the Oyo state chapter of the Supreme Council for Sharī‘ah in Nigeria announced its plan to inaugurate a Sharia court in Oyo town on January 11, 2025. The sound of Sharī‘ah sends shivers down the spine of some uninformed and Islamophobic non-Muslims. We saw this during the era of Islamic banking which came into light during the days of Chuckwuma Soludo as governor of CBN.

Whenever Sharī‘ah is mentioned, they quickly attach it to Islamization, and antagonise it with the last drop of their sweat and blood. In this context, a Sharī‘ah Court is basically a place where Muslims can take their personal matters to for adjudication. The Constitution of Nigeria doesn't grant the jurisdiction over criminal matters.

Kwara State is a predominantly Yoruba speaking state. Its capital, Ilorin, has a Sharī'ah court that has been operating for over 40 years. No non-Muslim in Kwara State has been oppressed by the Sharī‘ah Court or Islamised by it. The Sharī‘ah Court constitutes no threat to anyone's existence. What then is the problem here?

Why are the so-called Yoruba nationalists agitated? Why are they threatening to destabilise the peace and security in Oyo state which is a predominantly Muslim state over the establishment of a court to adjudicate Muslim matters? Is it wrong for Muslims to enjoy freedom of religion guaranteed by the Constitution?

Meanwhile, I think that most of those who start their sentences with, "I'm a Muslim" when antagonising Islamic teachings are either non-Muslims in disguise, or at best ignorant and gullible Muslims.

So far, the FG of Nigeria has issued 6 sovereign oversubscribed Sukuks to the tune of ₦742.557 billion. The Sharī'ah instrument has contributed immensely to our infrastructural development.
