Durante siglos, los marineros llevaban aceite de oliva a bordo por una razón sorprendente: lo vertían al mar durante las tormentas.

¿Funcionaba? Sí.

El aceite se extendía formando una película extremadamente fina sobre la superficie del agua, reduciendo la tensión superficial y dificultando que el viento levantara olas rompientes alrededor del barco.

Esta técnica, conocida como “aceite de tormenta”, ya era mencionada por Aristóteles hace más de 2,000 años y fue estudiada experimentalmente por Benjamin Franklin en el siglo XVIII, quien comprobó que unas pocas gotas podían calmar una gran extensión de agua.

No detenía una tormenta, pero podía hacer que el mar fuera menos violento cerca de la embarcación, aumentando las posibilidades de sobrevivir.

A veces, uno de los inventos más ingeniosos de la historia no era una máquina… sino una simple botella de aceite.
