Why do we end up with bad politicians? This is a question that was asked by the British philosopher Bertrand Russell. In fact, he said, "Why is it that the dumbest people are so confident, while the intelligent ones are so full of doubt?"

Essentially, what he meant is twofold. On one hand, he believed that intelligent people don't really want power because they are aware that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. On the other hand, less intelligent people often want power for power's sake. They tend to be very determined, self confident, and sometimes even corrupt.

This means that, inevitably, the people who come to power are often those who are undeserving of it. Conversely, those who don't aspire to power are often the ones who would be most worthy of it. The result is an imbalance where the worst people become our leaders, including the least intelligent, while the more intelligent people stay at home, pursue other endeavors, and choose not to be part of politics.
