It’s difficult not to feel pretty cynical about these kind of requests from @DefraGovUK
We fill out the survey..
Then they use it against us, to drop payments for environmental benefits to below the minimum cost
‘Because farmers love doing it’
Yes. I enjoy it.
But do you know what I enjoy more?
Being able to provide for my kids.
This rationale isn’t going to work unless we can make decent profits from selling raw ingredients for food so we have a surplus to indulge our “loves”
Absolute nonsense
We are almost certainly experiencing a decline, and a significant one, because of declining real world budgets and increased trade pressure
Find me one expert who agrees with this assessment, one 🤷🏼♂️
This is a disastrous government for nature
@OakbankGame@DanielZeichner@SteveReedMP So many broken promises and mis-truths told to HLS agreement holders about the ability to transition across into ELM’s
@OakbankGame@DanielZeichner@SteveReedMP But they are not being brought in line, payment rates are only 1/3 of the difference between the old rate and equivalent SFI rate. Still woefully low for the cost to implement!!! Wild bird mix was £450/ha, now £588.63………in SFI £853. It’s insulting frankly!
1/2 Just thought i’d share this letter we received literally yesterday from Daniel Zeichner MP thanking us for everything we have done to shape the new sfi and reassuring us that the government is investing in the industry
And if you wonder what that all means, and whether this isn’t just about paying your fair share of tax, then this might explain…

The stupidest bit of this is that the treasury value clearly doesn’t understand that farms are the primary match funders and cash flow mechanism for nature restoration in the U.K. - actually bankrolling their own COP29 promises as co funders
Half of them earn less than £25k
An excellent letter by Sir James Dyson. Well worth reading, many valid points, and we in our ‘farming’ bubble need to remember that it’s all businesses that IHT applies too, & is equally unaffordable to many of them.
RISK ⚠️ now shouldered by food producers is huge
🌧️ climate change
🛒 unfairness in the supply chain
💰 reduced government support
❓ policy uncertainty
📈 market volatility
Our entire food system is built on remarkably fragile foundations & the goodwill is running out.
@JanetHughes Hi Janet, when can we expect an update on being able to transition from old (rolled on) HLS agreements into SFI? With payment rates for historic HLS schemes running way behind cost of delivery, any help with this would be much appreciated!
@JanetHughes@agrinick Many thanks for your reply 👍🏼 looking forward to being able to make the move and implement all of the things I know will make such a difference 😃
