NEW: #Thailand's Office of the Attorney General should immediately withdraw its appeal against Sirachuch and urgently investigate and prosecute the Thai soldiers involved in the torture and killing of Aung Ko Ko.

Sirachuch, a #Myanmar national, was one of several eyewitnesses to the torture and killing of Aung Ko Ko by Thai soldiers in Thai-Myanmar border in January 2024. He was falsely accused of killing Aung Ko Ko and spent 681 days in prison. Although a Thai appeal court exonerated and released him in December 2025, a public prosecutor in Tak Province recently filed an appeal to the Supreme Court.

"Instead of prolonging Sirachuch's suffering, Thai authorities should withdraw the appeal, compensate Sirachuch, and ensure accountability for those responsible for torturing and killing Aung Ko Ko," said @MatthewFSmith, CEO at @FortifyRights.

Christopher Anderson told the Senate on Thursday his top priority in Phnom Penh will be dismantling the scam networks that he says have stolen tens of billions from Americans and trapped hundreds of thousands in forced criminality. He also flagged politically motivated trials and the suppression of speech and assembly.

Not a word on the Thai occupation of Cambodian border territory. Youk Chhang of DC-Cam noticed. "The US doesn't seem to see this historical conflict as an issue. Thus, Thailand is going to occupy the border at least through this administration and until the US does care," he said at the hearing.

Anderson spent 17 years advising three US senators, most recently as Steve Daines' national security adviser. The post has been vacant more than two years.

The @FCCThai released a statement on 17 July 2026 about imprisoned Chinese investigative journalist (and now, refugee) Bai Zhaodong, who #Thailand is holding at the Immigration Detention Center in #Bangkok. The FCCT called on the Thai gov't to not send him back to #China, which it notes "routinely imprisons journalists on questionable charges."

Speaking to the News of #Australia about foreigners getting in trouble in #Thailand:

Phil Robertson, the director of Asia Human Rights and Labor Advocates (AHRLA) and an expert on Thailand, told https://t.co/ianQLqcYEs that, while Thailand has not executed anyone since 2018, the “cruel and unusual punishment is unfortunately still on the books for many offenses.”

“The country has a reputation for lax law enforcement, but the reality is deceptive. When Thai police actively pursue suspects, they are very good at apprehending them. Foreigners who commit serious crimes can expect years in a very tough, unsanitary and dangerous prison system that people still write books about,” Robertson said.

“Foreigners traveling to Thailand intending malfeasance or violence should recognize they are taking a huge risk in a country where most of them don’t speak the language and don’t really understand the realities beyond the pretty pictures Thailand paints to attract tourists.”

He added that, once in trouble in Thailand, it could be difficult for foreigners to navigate the complex legal system and law enforcement. “Getting oneself out of serious trouble in Thailand requires ample resources and the assistance of savvy locals,” Robertson said. “This is often beyond the means or knowledge of the average foreign visitor.”

China's state-run newspaper China Daily mocking Filipinos as monkeys is a blatant act of racism that has no place in civilised society. It recalls the infamous signs once seen during the British colonial era that read "No Dogs or Chinese Allowed," as well as the Japanese use of the term namban ("southern barbarians") to refer derogatorily to the peoples of Southeast Asia.

We do not know how many other peoples or ethnic groups in this region China may regard as ape-like. But today, we have seen how it views Pinoys. In this case, it could not even restrain its own racist instincts.
