For the second time this month I just heard about the job title of “futurist” in relation to AI. What kind of neoliberal consulting bs is this like yikes
The ethics of AI development, training, and deployment is not the same as, or reducible to, "ethical use." I'm seeing the latter sliding in to the discourse (esp in higher ed) and I resist it as a deliberate techno-determinist elision.

@Marc__Watkins@RosenzweigJane Same, I feel like citations treat it too much like a person - if I’m teaching FYs that “argument is conversation” (between humans who can actually disagree/respond with intent), citing a chatbot as a participant in that conversation does NOT sit well with me
Just saw some reporting that OpenAI is releasing a demo/prototype of something called SearchGPT. So re-upping this thread:
Chatbots are not a good replacement for search engines.
I teach them what AI actually is, what it does, and all the ways the results are not actually good. I have them read about the labor exploitation and the environmental impact. I tell them that I would prefer their imperfect English to AI. And I tell them I am not the AI police.
@raulpacheco I am a PhD student so take this with a grain of salt (and I think you’re maybe more talking about how to do this in conclusion sections maybe?) but I find John swales work on creating a research space in intros really helpful for thinking about this— https://t.co/uvDD1Q78RS
Long but great piece @techreview. If you have time, read it (takes ca. 1h). Here are some of my favorite quotes. "AI has come to mean all things to all people... It can feel as if different camps are talking past one another, not always in good faith" 1/12 https://t.co/mVJjENGpty
@world_on_a_wire@complingy And it’s invaded the way people talk about LLMs in SUCH a pervasive way. Like even if ‘install wizard’ construes that tech agentively, it’s so much more extreme with LLMs? And people don’t seem to be viewing it metaphorically too, which seems important
