Dear @Melebroz1 ,
Given that African rulers and merchants participated in the transatlantic slave trade, and that slavery existed across Africa long before European involvement and continued long afterwards, how do you intend to atone for your ancestors’ actions? Or is responsibility for historical atrocities something you believe should only apply to the British?
In the global post war economic boom all nations decreased debt. Debt against GDP only started to increase again during the Blair/ Brown government. And we still have healthcare and education. They are badly managed and hugely wasteful as are large sectors of are publicly funded institutions.
We live in a capitalist country. In its 2024 manifesto, Labour explicitly described itself as pro-business, pro-worker and committed to wealth creation. It is centre left- not socialist. It has been that way since the Industrial Revolution. Just because they pay out more in welfare the economic model is still capitalism.
@JustMoogie@BladeoftheS As stated in the original post, under socialism you will have to work- and will be given a house and healthcare will be free. If everyone has to work under socialism, why is it too much to expect the same in a capitalist society?
It’s exhausting being continually expected to feel guilty for something we had no part in and no control over. Slavery happened, it was horrific, and nobody disputes that. But neither the perpetrators nor those directly enslaved are alive today. We can acknowledge history without inheriting guilt for it.
@zarahussain999 You have just made the same tweet that you call disgusting but from the opposite viewpoint.
By your own rationale both are equally disgusting.
@TheAliceSmith And if socialism is supposed to give power to ordinary working people, why should an educated political elite decide what is best for them?
@PennyCrayon5@sallonsax We are told no one can afford to buy a house with is why there are so many renters. And parents, other rented properties, with roommates- I haven’t done a survey so these are just suggestions.
@ondineb@CallumLyon It’s tough for small businesses. You want to grow and create jobs, but you just can’t afford to. I hope you manage to be successful despite the difficulties you face.
@ZackPolanski If you took a billion from all the billionaires in the UK and spread it out it is less than £800 per person. We do not need a wealth tax we need a better economy.
What government manufactured struggle. I have access to healthcare via the NHS when I need it, and I have a job that covers everything I need. You may say I’m lucky, but I got luckier with every year I worked. But I do have money taken from me in the form of tax, and that has increased every year so I do have something taken away from me.
