Republicans voters either don’t understand how the debt ceiling works or they are purposely lying. House Republicans know how this is supposed to work, but are counting on Republican voters falling for their lies so they will try and hold President Biden responsible if we default. This would be wrong.

The 2023 budget was approved and passed by bipartisan vote. Raising the debt ceiling is necessary every year to cover the expenditures incurred per the budget as previously approved by Congress. This is how we have done this for years.

Refusing to pass a clean debt ceiling bill so the expenditures incurred as approved by Congress for 2023 is irresponsible and will cause catastrophic damages to the U.S., and globally.

Instead, House Republicans are holding our economy hostage and trying to commingle the 2024 budget that is normally negotiated in September-October through the Appropriations Committee separate from the 2023 already approved budget.

There is nothing democratic about trying to commingle the already approved 2023 budget with House Republicans’ proposed 2024 budget. It’s a hostage situation as Matt Gaetz even admitted yesterday in an interview.

If we default on paying our bills for the first time, House Republicans are solely responsible for the catastrophic outcome.
