Basic principles of non-fucked up healthcare:
1. Fucking around with people's basic autonomy is, in fact, traumatizing!
2. Trauma informed care means respecting people's basic autonomy.
3. No, trans people's autonomy is not somehow a bizarre magical exception to this.
@heterodorx @PGTingle You could say you don't support outright legal bans for adults, fine, but the gulf between that and "okay with" is pretty enormous here.
@heterodorx @PGTingle I'm not trying to wade into all the ways I disagree and think you're completely wrong about this (not cosmetic, not fantasy, absolutely should be covered by insurance, etc.), just pointing out that most people don't read "okay with" as anywhere near the position you're describing
3yo niece: I love snakes! They're so cute.
Me: They are! So cute.
3: Can a snake live in a house? Like a kitty or a doggie?
**3's mom, 25 feet away, suddenly alerted to this conversational development by parental omniscience, frantically miming NO NO NO NO SNAKES**
@CSullivan90 @nytimes A series of distortions by anti-trans ideologues and more quotes from hate groups doesn't exactly strengthen your case here. You also may have noticed that the NHS is not in the US, and isn't relevant to care here. https://t.co/UrjL1ESh7C
@BobWhencer@JuliaMasonMD1@benryanwriter Odd that you left out the next line: "Evaluating the evidence behind our recommendations, which the unsponsored resolution called for, is a routine part of the Academyโs policy-writing process." So more like, you ask for monogamy and the response is "but we're already monogamous"
The amount of time I spent squinting perplexedly at this, utterly mystified that this person had managed to miscount three instead of two words, may be the most Jewish thing I've ever done.
You donโt understand The Bible until you understand that there are tens of thousands of scholars throughout history who have literally dedicated their lives to being this meme but for the three words before God appears
@garylfrancione People misled or not told about their racial/ethnic background don't describe internally knowing anything about that background without specifically discovering that info, unless there's something visibly perceived by others--and not always even then. Very different from gender.
@garylfrancione Because we know pretty extensively that these don't function the same way for people. Compare data on intersex people mis-assigned gender at birth (who often make this known, even when unaware of their medical hx) vs. people given inaccurate info about their racial/ethnic roots.
When I was a teenager I would go on dates to The Strand and other stores with a $1 book section, with a "rule" that we had to pick out one book for ourselves, one for the other person. Hilarity (and sometimes excellent finds) ensues.
Perfect $2 activity, highly recommend.
Great list! I would add Word Up, Book Off, and Bluestockings for sure.
Other favorites: Word, Archestratus, Greenlight, Powerhouse Arena, Book Culture, Astoria Bookshop.
I don't begrudge people The Strand and B&N though! I have fond memories from both.
@sea_needs Great list! I would add Word Up, Book Off, and Bluestockings in Manhattan. Archestratus in Brooklyn has a fun focus on vintage cookbooks, foodie memoirs, etc (and often cafe pop-ups). Powerhouse Arena in Brooklyn is also fun. So many great bookstores!
@PedsDoc8@JuliaMasonMD1@CattyArt1@benryanwriter Yes, agreed! They said there was already an update and evidence review process planned. There was zero resistance to the idea of doing a review.
Hate is Julia/SEGM talking about being trans as a cult, working with ACPeds and Christian nationalists on anti-trans legislation, etc.
@lindsayfickas This underlying issue is 100% accurate... but it's not something that gets lost. There's no shortage of "transphobia is bad because it hurts cis people" takes.
Focusing on this gets us laws that claim to leave an exception for cis parents, and still criminalize trans people.
@ShapiroTattoo You could do an unblinded RCT, if you threw out all ethics. Calling psychotherapy an "active comparator" in this context is a) disgusting and b) flies in the face of all past data and experience. Also, virtually zero parents or youth would willingly consent/assent to this.
@Simon_Isturiz@benryanwriter@JuliaMasonMD1 They're both hate groups according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, is the thing. Worth looking up, since it doesn't seem you're familiar with what a hate group is, or any of the well known anti-LGBTQ hate groups out there. Lots for you to learn!
