Arnold Ridley, best known for his role as the kind-hearted Private Godfrey in *Dad’s Army*, led a life far more harrowing than the gentle character he portrayed. As the only original cast member to have served in both World Wars and the Home Guard, Ridley’s real-life heroism is often overlooked. He enlisted with the Somerset Light Infantry during the First World War and was soon deployed to France, where he was wounded by both shrapnel and a bullet to the thigh. Sent back to the front, he fought in the grueling Battle of the Somme, sustaining further injuries to his head and hand during a brutal encounter with German soldiers. His wounds required 15 operations and eventually forced him to return home as an invalid.

Despite his physical and emotional scars, Ridley volunteered once more during the Second World War, this time serving in the Intelligence Corps and helping to produce training films in France. Though he was later discharged due to his lingering injuries, he joined the Home Guard and dedicated himself to entertaining troops across the country. While he could vividly describe the horrors of the First World War in his unpublished writings, he found the trauma of his second service too painful to recount. Plagued by nightmares and fear, he nonetheless found strength in acting, offering warmth and laughter to a post-war Britain still recovering from its wounds.

Arnold Ridley died on March 12, 1984, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of quiet bravery and enduring spirit. His journey—from the mud of the Somme to the beloved TV screens of British households—embodies a unique blend of resilience, patriotism, and compassion. More than an actor, Ridley was a soldier, a survivor, and a storyteller whose life continues to inspire across generations.
