UNICEF decries Ebola misinformation
UNICEF Uganda country representative, Dr Robin Nandy, has cautioned against misinformation surrounding the current Bundibugyo Ebola Virus outbreak.
Nandy says many people continue to wrongly compare Ebola to COVID-19 because of their previous experience during the 2020/21 pandemic.
Nandy said the misconception has been amplified by sections of the international media, creating unnecessary fear and confusion about how Ebola is transmitted and the level of risk it poses to the public. Several countries have since closed their borders to travellers from Uganda.
“The route of transmission is completely different, ladies and gentlemen. COVID was spread through the airborne route. So through the air, through the respiratory system, through respiratory droplets. Ebola is transmitted not through the air, but through close contact with the patient.”
The comments also follow concerns raised by some Ugandans over what they describe as inaccurate or sensational reporting by sections of the Western media, which tend to bundle DRC and Ugandan cases, yet nearly all Uganda's cases are imported and way lower than DRC's.
For example, the latest Al Jazeera TV report claims that DRC and Uganda have 263 confirmed cases and 43 deaths as of May 30, according to Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya.
However, Uganda has so far recorded 9 confirmed cases, one death and two recoveries (imported), while 580 contacts remain under follow-up. Three health workers have also been affected by the outbreak.
Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids, or tissues of an infected person, as well as through contaminated surfaces, clothing, bedding, or medical equipment. The virus can also spread through contact with the bodies of people who have died from the disease during burial practices.
According to the World Health Organisation, Ebola symptoms appear suddenly between 2 and 21 days (typically 8 to 10 days) after exposure. They initially resemble severe flu or malaria, later progressing to vomiting, diarrhoea, and in some cases, severe internal and external bleeding

True.. And the specific birth place in Uganda is #Kibaleforest. Over the years, the Primates kept on eating that wild coffee and passing it out thru excretion. That's how eventually the plant breeders managed to pick up material for breeding & multiplication. So the first "breeders" of robusta coffee were the chimpanzees.. We can as well call it #ChimpanzeeCoffee . Great story indeed behind Robusta Coffee.
