The Captive Storm God and the Clever Fox
Because the storm god Iškur was held captive in the kur (the netherworld),
the rivers dried up,
the fields no longer produced grain,
the livestock suffered,
and children were swept away into the netherworld.
Enlil, king of the gods and lord of Nippur,
convened the divine assembly.
He said: “Who will go to the kur and bring back Iškur?”
But none of the great gods volunteered.
The Anuna gods remained silent.
Then Fox stepped forward and said:
“I will go to the kur and rescue Iškur!”
The gods were astonished, but Enlil accepted.
He declared: “Fox shall go to the netherworld!”
Fox entered the kur.
The beings of the underworld offered him bread and water.
Fox accepted the food and drink,
but he did not eat or drink them.
Instead, he secretly put them into his bag,
hiding the fact that he had not consumed anything.
@FrancoisXch these are administrative records: lists of goods (grain, oil, animals, textiles), quantities, and transactions used to manage the economy of the world’s first cities.
