THE FIRST GENEVA CONVENTION

In 1864, the first Geneva Convention was adopted to protect wounded soldiers and ensure care without discrimination.
This was a major step in making humanity part of international law.
The Red Cross remains committed to protecting life and dignity.

In February 1863, five citizens of Geneva met to turn Henry Dunant’s humanitarian idea into action.
That small meeting became the foundation of what we now know as the International Committee of the Red Cross.
