A ship arrived with oranges too bitter to sell. A grocer's wife refused to let them go to waste.
In 1797, a Spanish ship carrying a cargo of Seville oranges was forced to shelter in Dundee harbor during a storm. The oranges were too bitter for the local market, and the ship's captain sold them off cheaply just to recoup something from the load.
James Keiller, a local grocer, bought the cargo, uncertain what to do with it. His wife Janet is credited with the solution: boiling the bitter oranges down with sugar into a thick, tangy preserve, adapting an old Scottish tradition of marmalade-making that had previously used quince rather than citrus.
The Keiller family began producing and selling it commercially soon after, and Keiller's became the first company in the world to mass-produce orange marmalade in jars, turning a spoiled cargo into a Dundee institution that spread across the British Empire.

Les soldats sont "annulés" - c'est-à-dire tués par leurs chefs - pour un oui ou pour un non.
Quand ils sont blessés, ils sont malgré tout envoyés comme chair à canon, sauf s'ils payent à leurs supérieurs des sommes astronomiques pour être réaffectés sur un poste moins exposé.
Les officiers forment une mafia : ils volent les cartes bancaires de leurs soldats envoyés à la mort, s'approprient leurs soldes et primes, laissant les familles sans nouvelles, sans dépouille et sans argent.

Les soldats se sentent trahis par le pouvoir.
On savait qu'ils étaient envoyés à une mort certaine.
On savait qu'ils étaient torturés, jetés au trou, malmenés par leurs chefs.
Mais qu'un vaste système de détournement de fonds prospère sur leur mort et que les éliminations soient tellement systématiques qu'elles soient désignées par le terme "annulation", c'est inédit dans une armée moderne.
Même l'URSS ne traitait pas ainsi ses soldats.

The brightly painted parade of shops at 33 Rue d'Alexandrie in Paris shows the entrance to Cairo Passage which still exists today. The Autochrome was taken by Georges Chevalier on Saturday 18th July 1914. Elaborate signs and calligraphy painted directly onto the building fascades contrasts sharply with the bland corporate grey of 21st Century tastes, with a comparison showing the site as it is in the 2020s.

Напередодні Нового року 11-річній Юлі запропонували вибрати будь-який подарунок. Вона відповіла: "Хочу маму".

Її мама, Наталія Власова, вже 7 років у російському полоні. Бойовики "ДНР" захопили її ще в 2019-му, звинувативши у шпигунстві. Далі - тортури, сфабрикований суд і 18 років в'язниці.

Наталія - одна з двох тисяч українських жінок, яких незаконно утримує Росія. Майже кожна з них пережили сексуальне насильство та тортури.

Її доньці на момент розлуки було 4 роки. За 7 років полону вони говорили по телефону лічені рази.

Одного разу колишня в'язниця передала Юлі мамину кофту. Дівчинка носила її та нюхала - це був єдиний спосіб для неї відчути маму поруч. А потім дзвінки припинилися.

У "Ізоляції" Наталію роздягали, зв'язували скотчем, обливали водою та били струмом. Вона казала: "Розплющую очі - а в мене обличчя у запеченій крові".

Її закривали в "кам'яному мішку" - крихітному приміщенні без можливості сісти, де від холоду німіли ноги. Їй вибили зуби та ��иривали волосся.

Але вона не плакала й трималася. Наталія - психологиня, у камері малювала, займалася йогою й підтримувала інших.

Умови були нелюдськими: 10 квадратних метрів на 14 осіб, бетонна підлога, металеві нари та відсутність вентиляції.

Вода - раз на три дні, баня - раз на два тижні. У камері кишіли клопи й таргани. Годували водою з гнилою капустою. Медичної допомоги не було - максимум аспірин.

Людмила Гусейнова, яка сама пережила три роки полону й заснувала ініціативу "Нумо, сестри!", б'є на сполох: жінок вивозять углиб Росії та переміщують між ко��оніями.

Зв'язок із Наталією майже втрачено. Під час суду в Ростові вона свідчила про тортури й насильство, казала, що просила застрелити її, але їй відмовили. Імовірно, саме за ці свідчення їй винесли 18 років.

Організація Гусейнової опікується Юлею, але не може замінити маму. Дівчинка чекає щодня. І коли їй запропонували подарунок до свята, вона відповіла: "Я хочу маму".

Гусейнова наголошує: потрібна політична воля та міжнародний тиск. Їхня організація передала списки майже 40 жінок до Офісу Президента, Координаційного штабу, Омбудсмена, Папи Римського та Білого дому.

Few Scottish names carry as much fire and loyalty as Fraser.
The Frasers rose to power in the Highlands around Inverness and the lands of Lovat, along the fertile strath of the River Beauly. Their very name may come from the French fraise, the strawberry flower, and to this day the clan arms are strewn with silver cinquefoils, the little five petalled flowers that look like strawberry blossom. The Frasers of Lovat were among the great Jacobite families, and they paid dearly for it. At Culloden in 1746 the Fraser men stood and bled for the Stuart cause, and afterward their chief, Simon Fraser, the Old Fox of Lovat, went to the scaffold in London, the last man in Britain to be publicly beheaded.
Yet the clan endured. Frasers rebuilt, Frasers emigrated, Frasers carried that name and that motto to Canada, America, Australia and New Zealand. Wherever they went, they kept the same reputation, fierce in loyalty, quick in courage, steadfast to their own.
If Fraser is written anywhere in your family tree, then Je suis prest is your inheritance too. It is the readiness of a people who never learned how to quit, who stood their ground when standing meant losing everything, and who still rose again on a foreign shore.

We've had arsons, interference in politics, disinformation, espionage, kinetic attacks.

Russians tried to blow up a moving train. We also have incursions by cruise missiles and drones.

We were spending 2% of GDP on defense for the last 20 years, but we've augmented it. We're also developing own defense industry.

The challenge now is to draw the lessons of Ukraine-Russia war and implement them in our procurement, art of war, and training.
